Read the .advertisement * The Chester and Union Narrow Gaugg Railroact. We learn that the preliminary survey for the propose,i Cbpstor and Union Narrow Gauge 11ilroad .has been completod. A report with estimates was si'uitted to the corporators of the road at the grand barbocue and meeting which took place on thme 25th, at Lock hart's Shoals, on .Broad river. About one thousand people were there assemblod, to discuss the prospects of the road and to devise ways and means for building it. Judge Mackay made one of his hap piost speeches, giving a full state ment of the many advantages of the narrow gauge system, and its per foct adaptibility to the wants of our people. Ho demonstrated con clusively that, by adopting the three foot gauge for all cross lines, and by using convict labor in buildu ing them, a railroad may be easily constructed by any coranunity that really needs it. Short and very effective addresses were delivered by Major RI. W. Shand of Union, Dr, A, II. Dayoga, and W. H. Hiw, din of Chester. About $15,000 was subscribed at once, and such pledges were given as insure the amount necessary to secure th echartor a.nd the speedy construction of the road The survey was made by Capt. C. S. Dwight, Chief Engineer of the c0hoster & Loenoir 11ailroad.' Why cannot Fairfield haye built through her territory the proposed narrow gauge railroad from Chester to Georgetown, via Camden and Suinter ? Lot our people keep the mnatter in mind. Fairfield must act, and that soon, if she would keep her .aigient rank amongst her sister .counties. MEANING OF AMJN.-,-.4 correspond ent, writing from Lacon, Ill., seunds the following anecdote of a boy's attempt at defining:' During the last winter there was a religious interest at Vamna, Ill. The pastor of the Methodist church, the Rev. Mr. Deming, was in the habit of holding daily a ol4Ldren's sneeting, at whieb the boys ,and girls stopped for a few mone0sts oia their way from school. .In order to interest and instruct thel children, topics. Ono day ho asked the moaning Qf "Amon." No pne an sworod. "Yoiu have often," said the clorgy man, 6heard the brethren say 'Amon ! Amon I' while some one w ts praying. What did they mean ? If any one knows lot hin) hold up his hand." Up jumpod a little follow, so eager to answer as not to wait for recognition. "I know !" ho called out. "It iuoans A-urry up am yet throuUh /" Thore was an audible smile, and many of the elders, we have no doubt, felt that the definition would be very useful if it could be gener ally cce)ted, and "Ainan" i1sed to shorton long prayors.
