Aikon, of Columbia, were in attendance on the session of the circuit court-the former as attorney in several civil cases, and the latter as medical export in the case of the State vs. Henry Wallace, inicted for murder. The second ontortaiment of the H-istrionic Club camne off at the Thespian Hall on Wednesdaiy eve ning, and was very well attended. D~wight has received tihe appointment of engineer in chazrgo of the Chester & Lonoir Narrow Gauge Railroad. This road is now~ completed to Dallas, N. C., andl will bi e at once pushed to tile ferorminus at Lenoir, N. C. Captain Dwight will be in charge f 4this work, and a better selection could not have been made by the dlirectors. He has had long exp~erience in his~ profession. As engineer on tihe staff of General Korshiaw during the wvar, he was a most efficient and valuable officer. Ho has at difforont times bo0on en gaged on the Blue Ridge and other railroads in1 this State, and on several in the West-am ong themi the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railway. On this ho was empioyed ias nrincipal asitant in t~hn m.ectin of the bridge across the Mi ssouri riVer at .AooII\nville. Thiis heie is one of the fintest struetures of the kind in America. With such an ox. peri en1eo and with native talent of a high order, captain Dwight will provo a most exeolloit ollicor, and will do good service for the Chester and Lenoir. Tho Circuit Court. M, Mackay for dcfendait. Verdict-Guilty, The defendant's counsel imade and argued a motion for a nw trial, ou the ground that tho vordict was contrary to law and the evidence. The motion was overruled, and the prisoner remanded to jail for sen tence. The Stato vs. William Smith, in dited for obtaining goods by falst pretenses, A. M. Mackey for do fondant. The ca5o was submittec t without argmn. Vrit-o guilty. The prisoner in this case was charged with procuring goods, un(er false pretenses, from -Mr. W 1. Kennedy, living near Ridgeway. The accused had given a noto se, cured by at lien upen his crop. Af ter working about two months, ho left his emiployer, amnd was then in. dieted. His Honor the presiding judge charged the jury that as th< prisoner had given a noto for the amount, due, and that note had not yet matured, if could not be showri that he laud obtained tihe sulhie under falso pretenses-ulpon th<t ground that it could not yet bo de termined whether the accused would pay his debt or not. I'he court adjourned at two o'clock, i. im., on Tuosday. The petit jurors were notified to appear on the 9th of July, when the court will be held for tho trial of civil causes only. Tho plresentment of the grand jury contains nothing of public in terest. The prisoners sent to the pen tentiary were taken to Columbia by Sheriff Ruff on Friday morning. Building and Loan &psooition.
