The tin-can season has passed away from a lack of unwary country canines, and fighting flies will soon become the fashionable amusement. Mr. Hemphill of Chester has in. trcduced a bill' providing for a special trial justice'for Blackstock, as that town is directly on tlhe line between Chester and Fairfield. The LogislaiEth -shoild pasp an amendment touthe constitution requir ing every, one to show a poll tax re ceipt beforebeing permitted .to vote. This world raise several thousand dollars more in Fairfield. The .Register is mistaken in stating that the rifle company at this place has received the name of the "Gordon Riflemen." No name has yet been settled upon. Governor Hamp ton has commut.. ed to imprisonment for life the sentonces of seven of the ten Lowndesville murderers. The other three were hung at Abbeville on Friday. E" We have on hand some blank judgment rolls, which lawyers will find very convenient. These blanks have been prepared under the super vision of experienced practitioners, and will be found fully up to the mark in all respects. We are indebted to Mr. R. J3 S McCarley for some excellent cigars, branded "The Faithful 7." They are very fine in every respect, and we advise smokers to give them a trial. On each box are the names of the seven who stood by the law in the Electoral Commission--M. McCarley has likewise receiveld some of the celebrated "Triumph Rye Whiskey," which will be found pure and fine in all respects. It is guar. anteed old and pure. A game of Base Ball was played, or rather begun, on~ the College green on Wednesday afternoon, be-. tween tho colored club from Chester and the one at this place. During the fifth inning, the Chester club made objection'to a ruling of the '; umpire, and after the lapse of the time fixed in the rules, he called the \ game, and announced a victory for the Winnsboro club. The annual meeting of the Fair', field Bible Society was held in the Presbytei-Ian ohurch on' Thursday last. The oustomnary address was delivered by Henry N. Obear, Esq., anid was ini all repets a irst,. ing and creditable production. Mr. Thos. K. Elliott was chosen to deliver the atnniversary address at the next meeting, in April, 1878. PERsoIAL.-Dr. E. W. Aiken, a rising young physician of this place, has located in Columbia, whore he will enter permanently upon the practice of his profession. He car ries with him the best wishes of his numerous friends. Mr. M. C. Robertson, formerly a citizen of Winnsboro, and recently a resident of Rock Hill, has been ap pointed to a position in the office of the Secretary of State, and is now in Columbia. Mr. Robertson will prove a faithful and efficient official, and the State Department is fortu nate in having procured his services. AMATEUR TILEATRICALs.-An enter tainment will be given in the Thespian Hall on Tuesday and on Thursday evening, May 8th and 10th, by the Histrionic Club of Winnsboro, com posed of a number of ladies and gentlemen. Every effort has been made to have the entertainment a perfect success. The proceeds, after paying expenses, will be given to the rifle company to assist in pro curing uniforms. In connection with this exhibition refreshments will be served by the ladies, and the proceeds devoted to the use of the Women's Christian Association recently organized. The object of this Association is to further the work of the Young Men's Christian Association. It is proposed to establish a reading'.room on the plan adopted in those cities where such an arrangement has worked to greatest advantage. ANNIVERSARY PARADE.-The Fair field Fire Engine Company cele brated its seventh anniversvry on Wednesday afternoon by the usual parade. There was a good turnout, and the men presented an unusualiy fine appearance. The engine was in good condition. It was draped in mourning, in respect to the memory of the late President Dwight, and the members wore the customary badge of mourning. - After the parade, the usual elec tion of officers was held, with the following result : President--W. G. Jordan. Vice-President-Jno. J. Neil. 1st Director-.James A. Brice. 2d -Director-J. H. Cummings. 3d Director--W. H. Williame. 4th Director-J. F. McMaster. Secy. and Treas.-E. 8. Chandler.
