A negro stole a belt from J. R. Tolleson’s store Monday. After an exciting chase he was run down and the belt taken away from him by the irrcsistuble 1’. V., hut he managed to escape afterwards. We congratulate the Limestone Colored Baptist church in the prom ise of a visit Nov. 12 and Iff, of such good Christian friends who will come in the spirit of the gospel to teach and open wider paths of usefulness, and life to a higher plane their colored brethren in the ministry. The Northern and Southern Baptists have clasped hands over the chasm of prejudice and turbulent feelings and locked in the embrace of co-operation they unite heart and hand in every effort Jthat will enlighten and im prove the moral and religious condi tion of the colored race. We com mend Spartanburg Association for taking hold so promptly and vigor ously of this noble project and gladly will wo welcome the friends, assured that this departure from their press of prescribed work will be crowned with blessings and the recipients of their kindly impulse pleasantly and profitably receive all that shall be said and done. The pastors have met ere this in Spartanburg, gathering around them a large number of col ored ministers and deacons for the solo object of instructing, looking into details of work, comforting and encouraging—anxious only to have “workmen appioved unto God, work men that needeth not to be ashamed. Our friends who shall visit us for this good end are well known and beloved in this nndjsurrounding country. The only stranger to the majority of us will be Rev. A. C. Osborne 1). I), who is the strengtli and warm friend of Benedict College in Columbia S. C. This is a theological institution for colored ministers and u school for yemng aspirants who are reaching after lofty heights in every place of mental and manual work. Rev. Osborne has been warmly and tend erly received into the homes and hearts of South Carolina and has made himself acceptable and beloved to all whose good fortune it has been to meet him. Johnson returned from Cincinnati last week after an absence of ten days from the city. Maj. A. B. Woodruff, a prominent citizens of this county, was in the city this week the guest of I’rof. H. P. Griffith. U. Surratt, of Grassy Pond, was among the ardent new county men in town Saturday. Afr. Surratt is not only a good new county man but one of our best farmers. C. A. Spencer, of Lawn, was in the city Saturday buying goods to re- plentish his stock. Mr. Spencer is not only a good funner but also a good merchant. W. C. S. Wood, of .Grassy Pond, who has been quite sick, was in the j the city Saturday receiving the con gratulations of iiis many friends. 1 Mr. Wood is a new county man from a way back. G. W. Davis is a strong new county man and says it will go through with a whoop. Win. Parker, of Wilkinsvillc, was In the city this week and like all progressive young men he is a new county man. W. W. Ruppe, of Alau l. was in the city Monday. Like all the rest he is a new county man and says it is booming in iiis seel ion. W. E. Morgan is on the streets these days looking after his business, the same as he did before he lost his son by accident only a few weeksngo. D. C. Painter, one of the best working and most successful farmers in this section, comes to town about three times a week now to get the last news about the new county. “Drate” is a now county man right. Making Preparation. It was our pleasure to visit hist Sunday t he Sunday Sehol of Lime stone Colored Baptist Cureh. We found timely preparat ions had been made for guests who slmll come next week to do kind work for our colored frieful. The church was in apple pie order. The exterior painted and a roomy vestibule attached. The inside wails were snowy white with no untidy deplacemcnt. A neat carpet with conspicuous law “No spitting on the ffoorj” a new sove ready to give warmth and welcome to visitors pretty hanging lamps, bright roll picturesunfolding new lessons,plenty of Sunday School literature and the crowning requrement. a large hand some organ, made us congratulate our friends that “the blessings of the Lord muketh rich.” A large number of adults and children received in struction and particularly sweet were the praises of these people who are lovers of songs and music. Let us add that courtesy and glad welcome marked our visit and we believe the pleasure enjoyed was quite reciprocal. * The Circus. Limited time and press of other news prevents an extended notice of Mr. Mains’ circus, it was good. The menagerie was small but con tained some rare specimens of the animal kingdom. The ring perform ance was clean and every feature was good. Air. Lowlow was heartily cheered as he entered the ring and when he wished success to Limestone county the five thousand people cheered to t he echo. \Ve want to make special mention of the good behavior of the gathering Although there were more people present than ever before assembled in the city except on the Fourth of July, there was not a single arrest made and The Lkdgek did not see but three people who seemed in any degree under the influence of intoxi cants. Algood, Nov. 3.—John Harris, a hard working old darkey went to Clif ton one day last week and sold two bales of cotton and on his return home be was met by two white men who asked him to change some money for them,which he kindly proceeded to do, when ono of them snatched $1<» out of his hands and ran into the woods and made his escape. At last ac count he had not been captured. They both ought to ho lynched. There is no necessity to advise him not to monkey with unknown men here after. Mr. W. B. 1 ’rice 'and Aliss Emily E. Turner were married Oct. 21, the Rev. T. G. Campbell, officiating. It was a runaway affair and of course some body got pretty hot but no serious damage has resulted therefrom Airs. Mary Gardner has been suf fering with the sore eyes for several days, but is some better now. J. L. Clary went to Spartanburg lust Thursday on business. Our farmers up here are done gath ering their crops and have turned their uttentior. to sowing wheat and oats. Many, very many, of our people are attending the big show at Gaffney to-day.
