THURSDAY, DECEMBER 23.1937 book club meets WITH MRS. JONES. The members of the Barnwell Book Club were entertained by Mrs. W. M. Jones at her .home on Saturday afternoon. After the reg ular exchange of books had been held the members had a short business session. Evans was hos tess to the members of the Top Score Bridge Club at her home on Washington Street on Tuesday af ternoon. After several rounds of cards had been enjoyed it was found that the high score prize, a make up set, had been won by Mrs. Sol omon V .Brown, and the consolation prize, a box of stationery, was cut by Mrs. G. Bates Hagood. Mrs. H. M. Killingsworth was also remem bered by the hostess with a powder and perfume set. The hostess served delicious shrimp creole with coffee for refreshments. BRIDGE TOURNAMENT ENJOYED HERE. The members of the junior class sponsored a bridge tournament in the home economics room of the local high school on Friday after noon, for the purpose of raising money for the junior-senior ban quet. There wer eight tables set up for bridge. After several rounds of cards had been played it w r as found that the high score prizes at each table had been won by the following ladies: Mrs. W. J. Lemon, Mrs. E. J. DaCosta, Miss Mildred Manning, Miss Rosalie Spann, Mrs. Brewer, Mrs. Solomon V. Brown, Mrs. W. W. Carter, and Mrs. B. P. Davies, Sr. Delicious sandwiches and spiced tea were served for refresh ments. JUNIOR-SMART SET BRIDGE CLUB. * The members of the Junior- Smart Set Bridge Club were enter tained by Mrs. T. Ralph Brown at her home on Upper Main Street on Thursday afternoon. The high score prize for club members, powder dish, was won by Mrs. Mor- decai Mazursky, while the consola tion prize for club members, a deck of cards, was cut by Mrs. W. L.Mo- lair. The high score prize for guests, a deck of cards, was award ed Mrs. W. H. Lacey and the con solation prize, a set of measuring cups, was cut by Mrs. J. P. King Jr. After cards had been laid aside for the afternoon the hostess ser ved a delicious salad course with coffee for refreshments. Those who enjoyed Mrs. Brown’s hospi tality, other than club members, in cluded Mrs. J. P. King, Jr., Mrs. W H. Lacey, Mrs. Marvin Holland Mrs. Perry B. Bush, Mrs. R. E Brown, Mrs. J. E. Harley, Jr., and Mrs. Terie Richardson. NIGHT HAWKS BRIDGE CLUB. Mrs. B. W. Sexton was hostess to the members of the Night Hawks Bridge Club at her home on Upper Main Street on Friday evening. A delicious supper, consisting of quail on toast with all the trimmings. was served the guests before bridge was enjoyed. After several rounds of cards had been played it was Blatt had won the high score prize and that Mrs. Perry A. Price had won the floating prize. Mrs. Sexton had decorated a Christmas tree, at tached gifts to it, the gifts being attached to a string and each guest was allowed to pull a string and re ceive a gift in the order in which her score came, Mrs. Blatt being allowed the first pull. Those who enjoyed the affair, other than mem bers, included Miss Rosaliq^ Spann. BRIDGE PLAYERS ENJOY BANQUET. The first annual banquet of the members of the Ace of Clubs was held in the private dining room of the Barnwell Hotel on Friday even ing. A delicious full course turkey supper was served the guests in the dining room, following which bridge was enjoyed on the mezzanine floor. After several rounds of cards had been enjoyed it was found that the high score prize for ladies, a box of candy, had been won by Mrs. Charlie Brown, Jr., and the con solation prize for men, also candy, had been won by Charlie Brown, Jr, Each guest was presented with a favor, which, when popped, reward ed the owner by giving his or her fortune and also provided a cap, Mr. and Mrs. George R. Evans and Mr. and Mrs. Solomon V. Miss.Claire Dicks, of Dillon, is spending the Christmas vacation in Barnwell with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. Norman Dicks. Miss Mary Gay O’Bannon, a stu dent at Coker College, is spending the holidays here with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. H. L. O’Bannon. Miss Martha F. Grubbs, a stu dent at Limestone College, is spend ing the holidays in Barnwell with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Grubbs. Miss Marjorie Brown, Miss Ida Carter and Miss Dulice Harley, of Winthrop College, arrived in Barn well Tuesday to spepd the holidays with their parents. Cadets Edward Richardson, Billy Manning, Bob Sanders and Norman Dicks, of Clemson College, arrived in Barnwell Saturday to spend the Christmas vacation with their parents. Miss Vera T. Boulware, a stu dent at Queens-Chicora College in Charlotte, N. C., is spending the holiday season here with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas M. Boulware. Mrs. L. R Christie left this week for Atlanta, Ga., and Memphis, Tenn., to spend some time with relatives. n Mr. and Mrs. G. M. Greene and Mrs. Leila K. Best are spending some time in Palmetto, Fla., with relatives. Miss Margaret Lemon, of Foun tain Inn, is spending the holidays here with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. A. Lemon. Miss Louise McCullough left Friday afternoon for New York City where she will spend the Christmas holidays. Mrs. Lena Davies, of Decatur, Ga., arrived in Barnwell Sunday to spend the holidays with Mr. and Mrs. B. P. Davies, Sr. Miss Dizahath Kennedy, of Log off, will arrive Thursday to spend the Christmas holidays with her sister, Mrs. T. Ralph Brown. Cadet Robert L. Bronson, Jr., of Porter Military Academy, is here spending the holidays with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Bron son. Cadets Denton Rountree, Billy Davies and Tom Boulware, of The Citadel, arrived in Barnwell Satur day to spend the Christmas holi days with their parents. A Plexico at the home of the latter on Thursday afternoon. During the business session the following of- icers were reelected to -erve during the coming year: Mrs. J. J. Bell prsident; Mrs. J. E. Mahaffey, vice- president, and Mrs. E. D. Peacock secretary and treasurer. Mrs. Bell then appointed the following com mittee chairmen: Mrs. G. M Greene, program committee; Mrs B. L. Easterling, attendance com mittee; Mrs. P. W. Stevens, publi city committee and Mrs. Quincy Martin, birthday treasurer. After the business session was completed a most interesting pro gram was given. Mrs. Charlie Brown, Sr., Jed a discussion on “the Cultivation of Chrysanthemums and Mrs. B. L. Easterling gave an excellent reading. During the social hour an unusual and entertaining contest was heJd with Mrs. J. J. Bell being the win ner. After the contest the guests were invited into the dining room, which was tastefully decorated in true Christmas decorations, and de licious refreshments were served.
