The Italo-Hibernian poet, Tomas- chelli, haa written: . “I think the meanest historian on earth la the one who ncorded the day of one’a birth." If your life has not been particu larly happy or lucky, why should peo ple observe the .anniversary of your birthday? ' / Trple »iahr"T>roiTF^yf day* imrfcbmr bewspapers give a list of the hirthday* of prominent men every day but there are two opinions about that. Young ladies of a certain age gef 'one birthday and stick to it. Theyaie twenty-two for instance, until they reach thirty-five, and then they her gin to go back. A good plan when you begin to be old is to select a certain age and keep it. Why get any older? As for me I would prefer to cele brate anniversaries other than my birthday. -I would like to recall the first time I fell in love, if I could»,or. the first view of the sea, or the first revela tion of moonlight or starlight. ^ The first good view of a tree would be also wqrth remembt.ring, or an orchard in full bloom. The first good yivestment I evor made or the first examination success fully passed, or the first time I es caped a merited punishment. I rt(member the'first day I was con verted to Wagner, and the first time that the full appreciation of the old masters in painting dawned on me. These are epochs in one’s existence, divine enlargements^ to the house of life and commendable' as well as ccmmemorable. The firstjiayday also adds to one’s superiority complex. If we are going in for celebrating, these might be worthy celebrations. But just to record that you have* lived some, sixty years—of what good is £hat? Life is a pleasant thing'perhaps and A is good to mo Um ton and to func tion otherwise, and one would not willingly give R all up. Rut not very much of the tim# are we glad we were ever born. Perhaps we ought to be. but the mulligrub* are too busy with most of us and our lift is hardly successful enough for us to celebrate continfously. It is very complimentary for our (Yirnds to say that they are glad we were bom and they hope we will live a thousand years, but we sometimes question whether they really mean it. Some of us have reached the declin ing years. When somebody asks u« to havu a cocktail or a highball we decline, and if certain forms of ford are put before us we must also refuse because the doctor says so. Our present ailments and limita tions are suffering without railing up thooe of'the pa*t. W.. would nrver render ourselves public nuisance* by continually rehearsing our calamities. Let us forget them. About the be-l thing we can all do with the past is to forget it and look forward to the future. That may be better, ami again it may not be. but at least it ha* the advantage of being untried, and we are juatified in looking To ward to it hopefully. Chicago gangsters are reported to have sought court protection against the activities of police, and some kin-1 judge may yet placet a number of them behind the bar* where they will be safe.
