The Scandinavians run a cable un der the water, ship and sell power to Denmark. /. » , There’s a hint for New England, especially for Maine, which intelli gently plans to harness the great tides in the bay of Fundy. The Maine export about which we know most ia seed potatoes—excellent potatoes. This writer has bobght many a car load. "Junior Follies" a Success. “The Junior Follies," presented at the Vamp Theatre last Wednesday evening under the direction of Miss Virginia Mosely, was a great success from every standpoint. The amateur actors and actresses acquitted themselves splendidly and a little over one hundred dollars weir* added to the Methodist Church Budding Fund. The “power crop” of Maine should bring to the state millions of <|ollars every month, without the inconveftien- -fo Barnwell County with ,Mrs. A. A. ce of fighting potato bugs. Nothing comes suddenly.- It took a long time and several revolutions for the humble bourgeoisie to take •*# power from kings, nobles and clergy, thus increasing a thousandfold the number of those ^ith a share in life’s good things. iWd the merchants, the “money men" did not gain power except as they learned how to use .it. The next step along the' path of democracy will be another increase in the number of earth’s children that share its property. That step will be taken when the great crowd learns how to rule itself and finds competent leaders that won't betray it. If our men of power have any In telligence, the change will come a long time hence, and as peacefully as an election in a golf club. The trouble is that our “big" men take themselves too seriously, at taching to their bank balances more importance than to historical prec edent and the rights of others. Fiank Casale, aged forty-five, is arrested for chaining his children to the floor, and flogging them Vith a heavy rope. He beat his wife when she released one of the children, chain ed down for four-days. ’ Bootleg whiskey. Mrs. Ferguson, Governor of Tex as takes prohibition seriously. She wonders why they arrest bodleg- gers who carry two or three pints for sale, but don't arrest bootlegger worth more than $5,000. The Lady-Guwrnor has some thing to learn about American meth ods. In this country five thousand dollars means protection, five million dollars means immunity. African savages capture a hip popotamus, oat all their distended stomachs can hold, lie down beside the carcass, *le4p, wake, eat more, sleep agfrin And so on. Some die of ptomaine poisoning as the meat gets bad. The survivors think that they have* had n good We improve on the hippopotamus eaters and the Romane with Urge marble receptacles to which they re turned s. food previously swallowed that they might swallow more. But our eating, Hke our thinking and our ideas of justice,, is of ah age 1000 years behind onr scien tific age. We are nearer to canni balism than to civilization. One- half of the adults do not even know enough to protect their children from the effects of gorging. New Hampshire i^evives solitary Imprisonment for criminals. For a strong brain solitude is a good thing, if not over done. Every man worth while seeks men tal solitude, difficult to find in this age. But for the weak, criminal brain solitude is dangerous, breeds bitter hatred, leads to insanity. As well prescribe solitary confine ment for a cancer patient as for a criminal. Christmas Seal Sale. The Christmas seal campaign, the money from which is used to fight tuberculosis, is now being carried oh Lemon as chairman. South Carolina’s allotment of sales this year is larger than ever before but the need of money to fight the great white plague is larger like wise and it is hoped by the officials of, the South Carolina Tuberculosis association that the sale this year will set a new high mark in this State. Last year the response was so generous that the 1924 sale is the largest on record for South Carolina. Buying seals will nave lives. The 'ampaign in this county began Mon day, the 7th, inst.
