L ILOCAL PERSONAL Sixty-five young men and women stood the teachers' examination at the court house last Friday. Supt. F. V. Clayton is in Columbia for several days in the interest of the schools of Pickens county. Mrs. M. C. Smith and children have returned from a visit to her father, R. W. Pickens, in Anderson county. Mrs. Ross Moon has returned from Winston-Salem, N. C., where she vis ited her brother, Beamon Jones, and family. We have some more interesting let ters from soldiers (one of them in France) which we expect to publish next week. F. H. Hopkins had a mess of Irish potatoes out of his garden May 2, which are the earliest we have heard of around here. T. R. Allen, of Pickens, has received a message stating that his son Roy, who is in the army, has arrived safely "over there." The city of Pickens has taken up the last of the Pickens R. R. bonds and for the first time in twenty years has no bonded indebtedness Dr. J. L. Bolt of Easley has olfered his services to~the government and will leave this week to enter the medical corps at Camp Jackson. J. Theodore Smith of Easley is criti cally ill and grave hopes are felt for his recovery. He is father of Mayor M. C. Smith of Pickens. Married by J. B. Newbery at his res idence, May 5, 1918, Miss .Minnie M. Hooper of Liberty, S. C., and Anderson P. Reece, of Camp Sevier, Greenville. A unit of the local chapter of the Red Cross will be organized at Cross Roads on Sunday. May 19, just after preaching service. Everybody invited to be present. V. E. hIenderson died Monday at the county poor house, where he had been an inmate for several years. He was an aged man and had been sick a long time with dropsy. Mrs. Kate L. Cureton visited her daughter, Mrs. Gussie Squires, in Greenville last week. Mrs. Squires is spending this week with her mother here recuperating from a recent illness. Hon. Wyatt Aiken, candidate for congress, was in Pickens last week looving over the situation. Mr. Aiken probably knows personally more people in this district than any other man, and is a good campaigner. The Pickens Chapter U. D. C. will meet on Friday afternoon, May 10, at 5 o'clock, in the Red Cross Rooms. This will be an important meeting as officers will be elected and plans for the County Reunion on June 3d will be made. Two stars were added to the service flag of Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Keith last week when their two sons, Oscar and Frank, left for naval service. The for mer has already served an enlistment; the latter has been a student at Clem son this year. Among the soldiers visiting home folks here last week we noticed the following: Frank and Charlie Wel born of Camp Jackson, Wyatt Jen nings, Dwight Attaway and Angus Aiken of Camp Sevier. There may have been others we did not see. In the annual state high school track meet held in Columbia on April 26, Porter Military Academy of Charlestoil won first place. The Pickens school team failed to score a point. Carl Crane of Liberty won the trophy cup offered for the best individual athlete. The first formal announcement as a candidate for Pickenaqgounty office this yrear is madle in The Sentinel this week by J. Hovey Earle, who seeks election to the state senate. Mr. Earle is a ion of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Earle of icar Pickens and is well known thruout :he county. He is a graduate of Clem ion College, is an efficient civil engineer md school teacher, having taught some >f the best schools in this section, and is a young man of ability. See his an nouncement. Henry D. Hendricks, son of James F. Hendicks of Pickens county, shot and fatally wounded P. B. Brooks, a merchant about five miles from Ander son, about ten days ago. Mr. Hen dricks was a constable and went to col lect some money from Mr. Brooks when the trouble arose which led to the kill. ing. Mr. Hendricks claims self defense and is now under $8,000 bond. He-is a brother of Luther Hendricks,'who was convictedl in Pickens court several yiears ago of killing a Brock boy and who wa's recently pardoned by Gov. Manning. Robinson as Chairman and Miss Lyda Hooker Secretary. Mrs. F. M. Cassell died at her home in the Pickens Mill village Monday night after a long illness, aged 68 years. She is survived by her husband and one son. Burial services were held at Secona church Tuesday afternoon. Freeman Patterson was badly, cut about the mouth and othei vin bruised Sunday afternoon when an''antohobile in which he was riding turned over. There were eleven passengers in the car which ran too near a ditch in trying to pass another vehicle going in the opposite direction. No others were badly hurt.
