Last Wednesday was the coldest of the winter. It snowed slightly in Pickens last Thursday night. Capt. J. T. Taylor spent one day last week at his old home in Taylors. J. E. Gassaway of Central was at the county seat Monday on business. We regret to learn that Miss Patti Porter is very ill with pneumonia. Misses Mattie Finley and Lorena Taylor spent Friday in Greenville. A. C. Sutherland of Pump kintown was in town Tuesday on business. James Farr, of Te xas. is vis iting at the home of H. W. Farr near Easley. Mrs. Oliver Smith of the Cedar Rock section is visiting at the home of Dr. J. N. Hallum. Daniel Winchester of Easta toe section was a business visi-I tor at the county seat Tuesday. J.G'~I.Towe and family of route 5 spent last Friday at the home of J. H. G. McDaniel. Thos. Durham of Pickens route 5 was at the county seat Saturday attending to ousiness. The Ladies Aid Society of the Pickens Baptist church met with Mrs. J. M. Gantt Monday afternoon. I. M. Mauldin, the popular dashier of the Pickens Bank. spent several days last week in New York on business. Mr. Robert Stewart is at Clem son College at the bedside of his sick boy, Bruce. We hope he will soon be well. * Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Car son of Central spent Sunday in Pickens with the family of Dr. Seawright___ John T. Lewis of route 3 spent~ a few days l st week with the family of B. T. McDaniel in. Pickens.. Ernest Folger will leave Sat urday for New York, where he will "spend about two weeks selecting spring and summer goods for Folger, Thornley & Co. Mrs. W. E. Robinson has re turned from a Greenville hos pital, where she successfully un derwent an operation, and we. are glad to state that she is greatly improved. W. - N. Bolding of Pickens route 2, was a visitor in town Friday. Mr. Boldin~g has been reading The Sentinel about forty years and had us run his subscription up another year' in advance.- Hie is a Confeder ate veteran and says he doesn't expect to be here much longer, but we hope for Mr. Bolding many more years of usefulness and happiness. Boggs of Calhoun spent Sunday in Pickens with the family of A. J. Boggs. J. M. Wood, a good citizen of Nine Times, was in Pickens Saturday on business. Mr. and Mrs. G. R. Hendricks spent Sunday with his mother near Griffin church. A. A. Jones, a prominent citizen of Griffin section, was in town Tuesday on business. W. A. J ulian. a merchant of Greenville, formerly of Pickens county, was here yesterday. Mrs. Zade Cox has returned to Pickens after a very pleasant visit to her home in Washington. E. E. Kennemore, a good citi zen of Liberty route 4, was in Pickens Moncda-y on bousiness. Col. J. E. Hagood, U.S. Com missioner, of Easley, was in the city on business, Friday and Saturday last week. Miss Cooper, of Greenville Female College, was the charm ing guest of Prof. and Mrs. J. W. Balentine last week. Mrs. J. L. 0. Thompson and daughter, Miss Alice, and son, Homer, spent Sunday with rel atives in Pickens. W. H. Field, one of the good and prosperous farmers of route 3 was in town Saturday and gave The Sentinel an appreciat ed call. The Ladies Embroidery Club met last week with Mrs. G. F. Kirby. A delightful salad course was served, and Mrs. Kirby proved a most charming hostess. Our popular pharmacists, Dr. J. N. Hallum and Dr. R. E. Lewis, are among the most proinent men of Pickens. In fact they are the pill-ers of this town. P. P. Boggs, who has been i' ing at Nimmons for the past year, left this county Saturday for Savannah, Ga., where he has accepted a position. His brother, Will, has been it Savan nah several years. Few towns of this size can boast of an establishment like that of Hughes Brothers. These people have a complete blacksmith shop, woodwork shop and corn mill combined. They (do most of their work with improved machinery, a tenhorse power gasoline engine furnishing the power. And they are preparing to install in their woodwork shop a jointer of the latest pattern. Keenan and A. P. Lawrence of Liberty are visiting at the home of B. F. Parsons. Misses Mary Lewis and Chris tine Sutherland have returned from a visit to Central, Calhoun and Richland. R. A. 1 ldii, of route 2, was a -business visitor at the county seat Monday. He paid us a pleasant call while in town. Quite a number of our young people attended a box party at Hagood's school house last Fri day night and all report a nice time. Julius E. Boggs, Jr. is expect ed to return from Florida this week. The offer of chromos for good fish stories has been withdrawn, Mrs. Sallie Sutherland is visit ing her uncle, Joe Stansell, en joying the pure mountain air and Mr. Stansell's fine frying size chickens. We learn that Tom Massin gale killed a large rattle snake near Martin school house last week, which is a very unusual happening at this time of the year. ___ Dr. Lawrence Roper and family are no-v making Pickens their home. Dr. Roper has been practicing dentistry in Georgia for the past three years but decided to come back to the best country in the world, and we are glad to have these good people back. Dempsey, of Spartan burg, who has been in Pickens for quite awhile, doing some work for the cotton mill, return ed to Spartanburg Saturday. Charlie Robinson, who for several years has been connect ed with an insurance firm uin Greenville, has resigned his po sition there and accepted a re sponsible place in Greenwood. We know he will make good and we wish him much and lasting success. It will be good news to the many Pickens friends of Messrs. Sam Craig, Cleo Mann and Gignilliatt Christopher, who are taking the law course at Univer sity of South Carolina, to know that each of -them successfully passed the recent examinations. Twenty-threeout of fifty in the class failed, but all the Pickens boys passed. There was no excuse for any well person not attending preach ing services in Pickens last Sab bath. In the morning and even ing Dr. Z. T, Cody, editor of thE Baptist Courier, preached in thE Baptist church here, and in the afternoon Rey. Mr. Bailey, pas tor, preached in the Presbyte rian church. H. M4. (Djock) Lewis, who was sentenced to jail about foum months ago for violating the whisky law, was released by~ Sheriff Roark last week, and has gone back to his home ir the Sunset section, where hE will make a crop this year. As soon as he was released he came to The Sentinel office and sub scribed for this paper. He paid for it in advance and .told us that he had never taken a papel before, but he wanted to take his county paper. We are glac to send it to him and hope hE will enjoy reading and derivE much benefit from it. While it jail he was a model prisoner.
