The Anderson Fire Department was organized on the first dny of July, 1884, by the founding of the Pioneer Steam Flre'Engine company. Thc equipment at that time consisted of a second hana steam Uro engine, the 'Pioneers' which was horse drawn. Thc team practiced for a stretch of 300 yards and with a weight of moro than thc contest al lowed. ThlB practice lengthened their wind and helped their endurance. Thc run that w*as made In the practice was from in front of the present, home of Mr. J. S. Fowler on Whllner street to th^ central reservior which Is tho one that only recently been unearthed. When the team left for Greenville there was little hope In Anderson that they might como back home as the winners for the company was then less than a year old.
