BP-Clje Messenger.. ;M. L. BONHAM,Jb., 1 Editom and JA8. S. PERRIN, ] Proprietors. - tl TUESDAY DECEMBER 29, 1885. o! i1 1 I. . I M ? a, j?V d( HRfSTMAS, pi ? Christmas has come and gone, and it seems to he the universal opinion, that socially it has been a very dull one. In a business point of view it is said that ^ there was a-large amount done. On the oi day before ChrisUuas the streets were % a .crowded with people and vehicles of all kind. Money seemed to be plentiful, 1nnrl w/? hmr nf anmn i?inri>Vian*D irhn rr made very large sales. On Christmas *! ,d?y *11 the stores in town were closcd E (and tiie streets were quiet. Later in the ai day, some folks had "aboard" more than ? their allowance of "spirits" and were a little loud, but not disorderly. We are not going to moralize over the occasion, but look forward to the ^ next festival, and wish all our friends and readers a happy and prosperous new year. J( 1 .____ Report of the High School of Abbe yine, s. i. ^ Although it has not been customary ^ to make a published report?of the condi- in tion of our High School, I consider this 01 a* th.e safest and best means of affording the trustees and patrons a definite idea of its progress and standing, m At the opening of the school in Septom- ^ ber, the roll numbered 72 pupils. By a er gradual increase, it had reached a max- oi imuin of 85 pupils, when the school fr closed for the Christmas holidays. Of c* these, 30 were present in the principal's room ; 22, in the first assistant^ ; and 33, in the second assistant's. I experi- _ ence irruat satisfaction in suvin? thnt th? advancement of each pupil has rcached my highest expectations. 1 do not attribute this success to my efforts nor to E the efforts of ray assistants, alone, but to ' the combined efforts of teachers and scholars, and of teachers and parents, ti The attendance has been very sntistac- bi tory, although I must insist, strenuously upon the co-operation of the parents e< in this connection. It would be utterly la impossible for tho teachers, alone, to A succeed, were they not stimulated by m the assistance of the patrons. Let me, J therefore, urge upon them the necessity for close attention to the scholars, while at home, so that they may. either fully m understand and know their recitations, at c the opening of the school, or may know L upon what particular subject to obtain ? information ; for, as we all know, tho ^ few hours of teaching must bo devoted, principally, each day, to tho recitations and to such explanations as may bo necessary for tho pupils' proper understanding of each subject. 1 would like, also, to call the attention of the natrons. oncn again, to the condition of our schoolbuilding. Why should not Abbeville boast of a more suitable and more attractive building for this purpose ? Why should not Abbeville boast, also, of a school of such a grade that the patronage will not be restricted to its immediate vicinity ? Is not the building one ^ condition of the school's success ? Are j, the people of Abbeville willing, then, to tt be surpassed by other places, of much less means and importance ? Although the trustees deserve much credit for their efforts and interest in this enters " prise, it would seem that they are not m properly appreciated, if we judge by the w slight general interest, evinced in this M direction. It will require more than the efforts of the few to ensure this success. Let us, therefore, turn our atiantiun to this matter; for wc all mast know the value of education in this age and the dependency of our children's success upon it. Allow me, then, to say that I hope to sec, soon, a lively interest awakened in this behalf; for by gome such n assistance alone, can I warrant the fu- 'J jture, permanent, success of our school. \\ Wibtek anchkn. m. A My wife and daughter suffered for years with au nffeetion of the throat, which was gradually hut surely under mi n liur their health, and woh a source o( anxiety to nil of us. Two of tlie bent physicians of the city and also a surgeon were vailed in, and after a careful examination they decided that thevo was no ohnneo of a cure un- J less they would consent to undergo a surirlcal operation. We were much opixwed to the knife being u*ed, until all other mean* had been exhausted. So. we began to use different throat remedies sold at drug stores. We finally got to Brewer's Lung Restorer, and the effects were A tmly wondorful; and after a few bottles had been taken they were entirely relieved of the ti-ouble and their health fully restored. If any of my family should ever bo similarly affected, . I would, if nocesHury, travel around the world A in order to get this remedy. Very respectfully, W. H. MANSFIELD, Macon, Ga. aoHnaanannBHMKSEnaai a Macon, Oa., August 15th, 1880. With great pleasure I certify to the efficacy of that truly excellent preparation?Brewer's Lung Restorer. It has indeed proven to be a sovereign remody tn my family. For many months iny wife lias suilored from weak lungs, A and has experienced great difficulty in breath log, fo mucn so mat sne could not sleep at all at nifibt; she also lost her appetite, and. in fact, her condition was truly ulurming. The Lung . Restorer having been recommended by several ' friends, I resolved to cot It and test its virtues, which I did, and with tlio most happy effect. She ha* taken bnt two buttles, and tne result Is wonderfnl. Slio now experiences no difficulty in breathing, her appetite Is good, and she is , rapidly regaining her strength, and I am convincea it* continued use will effect a permanent cure. I would, therefore, cheerfully recommend it to all who have weak longs, as it cannot fail to be of groat benefit to all who may give it a A trial You re trulv. O^O. W.
