Jud^e Cothran is at home, where he will remain till about the 1st of February. It is needless to say that the Eihgth Circuit is gratified at his election. He, is winning fame all over the State an J udgc. The South Carolina Conference now in Columbia, overruled the decision of the church with .regard to the charges against Rev. J. K. Itushton. a id reinstated him as a minister. We are indebted to Dr. F. F. Gary, for a copy of the Report of the State Board of Health. This bodv is accomplishing much cood work. Thft*olnmn before us promises to be interesting and we shall examine it with pleasure. Our friend, Mr. W. S. Cothran, is compFhining already of his eyes, nnd is afra'.d he will have to go to Atlanta to have them operated upon. We think it ? good scheme, and ndvixe him to go on immediately. Sunday was one of the most disagreeable days we have had this season, but, notwithstanding the inclemency of the weather quite a good congregation assembled in the morning to hear the sermon of Rev. J. Lowrie Wilson at tho Presbyterian Church. The serinou was h hoautilul one ami everybody present fdf fully repaid for braving the weather to hear this maw of God. Mr. Wilsoji also preache-l at flight a very acceptable sermon. "We welcome him to Abbeville, and trust thut great good may result fiVm his habitation with us. Orville T. Calhoun. Captain John Cochran got one hand right badly hurt in a gin, but Dr. Edwards fixed it up and he is doing nicely The bill to make emigrant agents pny a license of $500, meets with univeral favor with our people. It ought to be one Aiousand dollars. These miserable creatures ought to pay well for deluding their victims as they do. The jVetcs and Courier has been quite complimentary to Capt. M. L, Bonham recently. It alludes to niin as 'one of the distinguished editors of thr State" at the recent State Fair and is then very complimentary to him in acting Solicitor in that trouble in Edgefield. , The large Ellis family had a splendid re-union lust week at the old homestead. Misses K. P. and B. T. and M.M. Kllifi were present. The occasion was much enjoyed, though tempered with sadneAs. Prof. J. N. Young has received two telegrams announcing the very low condition of his daughter, Mrs. McHenry, of Alabama. Mrs. Jane Young left immediately for Alabama. We heartily Becond the suggestion ol our friend Mr. J. B. Bonner, of the A It. Prevbyterian, that we have a Christmas tree. Let us havo a nice one and one on which every body in town will be represented. We have not had one in so long that it would be immensely enjoyed. We were indebted last week to the kindness of Mr. Barnwell, the efficient and polito cashier of the Abbeville nanK ror a peep through this newly organized institution. One would scarcely recognize the old stand, it is ho nicc and new and airy. The very best Iockc have been secured and Dlaced upon the vault and rata and iCr burglar proof We congratulate Abbeville upon hoi officers and predict well for the inntitu tion. Miss Jennie Anderson, of Fairvtew and Mr. Stribbling, of Oconee County are visiting in Due West. We are indeed aorry that the Legisla ture has refused the people of Abbovilh County the reasonable request to be al lowed to vote on prohibition. This is a mistake and will bo the very means o throwing this whole issue into the poll tics of the county. For if our Legisla ! tat? will not grant us such * request th?Mi wo uiust sue to it that mon who go 0 thoro next time who will. The cahdi< s date running counter tn this measure ?p could not get a ''corporals guard" in j Due West. This is ft moral and social movement and we place it above poli^ tics. We believe not only in prohibition but total abstinence. The grog shop 4'must go" in Abbeville County. ~' It was a sad sight Saleday evening at j -Abbeville and on the roads leading lYom f there. A request to charter H railroad ? through the County is granted without ^ trouble, but when this request is asked j for by one thousand petitioners, the ( Logis lature must debate it on its merits and drag politics into the contest. Well let it come, it could have been settled outside of politics as other counties have done. Of course there are honest ' conscientious citizens who differ in these views and are entitled to their opinions, but why not submit this ques^ ticn to the people, the temperance men will abidb the will of the mninvitv. ? - ?V J " ? The course of three lectures given us i by Rev. Arthur Millard, whs immensely > enjoyed and appreciated by our citizens. There were splendid audiences out to hear the speaker. "Mary Queen of . Scotts." "Sir Walter Scott," and "Oliver Cromwell" were treated of in order I named. Never has a lecture been so appreciated in Duo West. On CromI well the last evening he held the audience spell-bound for two hours and [ twenty minutes. At its close l)r.' Grier proposed the thanks of Due West by a i rising vote, which was unanimously given. He goes to Greenwood from here. The colleges Will turn out Thursday i before Christmas and close for ten days. The Ninety-Six property, sold on last Moiulaj' at Abbeville, brought, on the whole, better prices than was expected. This shows that our town is on a boon). Mr. G. Owens, of Florida, is visiting friends near Ninety-Six. lie says it is cold up here. The ro?uni^n of the seventh Regiment on last Friday was not a success. We suppose the weather was too bad for old soldiers to turn out. There seems to be some misunderstanding about the rail roud tax to be voted on'in our township. All parties are requested to read the circular and tjxtruct from the Charter, issued by the proper authorities, and to take the true , moaning of the Charter when they judge the matter.
