At about 4 o'clock, last Wednesday [afternoon, Rome three or four hundred citizens assembled on the base ball grounds to Witness the match game between our boys and the Star Fort Club. At 5 o^teck-^harp, after the scorers, Mr. t. W. Porriri for Abbeville and Mr. W. O. Warnock, for Ninoty-8ix had been seated, and Messrs. Harvey Wilson and S. (Jf. Thomson acting as ninrahals, having quieted and moved the surging and eager crowd back to a proper distance, the umpire, Mr. W. H. Holland tossed the ball to the pitch, saying "play." The "96's" in the hole ; Stewart went to bat first, was put out; Dunning next to bat made a base hit; Blake and llice next to bat, but struck out in two, three ~?rderK leaving Dunning on base and scoring a white-wash for "96." A. W. Smith, Abbeville's Captian, then swung the ash, .making a good hit, then I'errin, Thomson and McMillian, who were put outin one, )two, ^hree order but bringing Smith home,, scoring one ahead for Ab Devuie on mo nrst even inning, "so to batagain scoring two. Abbeville next |^L to bat,- .b'lit that Mkurious korv" pitcher HBto^wistefl the aido out in one, two, three ^P^^orOor, tucking white-washes even and ?*96" one point akond. HLv [Much excitement, ?croi?oiing and / vociferous-yelling-cheers for "9G" took Kf place at this stage of the gam<\ Messrs. B''" Walter Tusten and Henry Mooro the nj leading adherents of the "96" boys B \ chiefly so, Mooro remarking "that they Xrere small but going to he 'hard childen 7 to nuss.". Walter although urged to u keep <juiat was inconsolable, Baying "he j{ vas going to halloo for "9G" till he was I K hoarse," and after the three first innings I '' he got hoarse and stayed that way until M'L about the 8th inning when "90" made j: some.more' very pretty pla3rs.] B!' The 1'9G'b" to bat again. went out un|i I der that terrible fire from I'errin in one, K| , two, three order. Abbeville next to bat, scoring four, reversing things so p*"-completely that "9G" was unable to reBy cover during the next six innings, alii] though "she" played well and with un1/ flinching determination under their gallant Captain, Mr. J. S. Crews. ? Abbeville white-washed "9G"' five times, Ninety-Six white-washing Abbeville twice ; Abbeville made two double plays, our short stop Mr. Parks making : one of thorn by catching a fly and unceremoniously stopping a runner from first base. Messrs. Ilice and Kinard, the 4"96" pitch and catch received many t compliments, and Pet Lipscomb their first baseman also received many sweet praises from some of our prettiest girls. Messrs..Perrin and Smith oui pitch and f catch pluyed the game through, throwing and Catching a powerful ball without ' wincing or making a single error of any material consequence. Messrs Cothran and McMillian received many loud cheers for some pretty catching?Wade ^ batted too like a hero. Mr. A. \V. Smith the Abbeville Captain and caich V made t)ic best record at the bat. scoring " five, and was put out once ; Mr. Ilice the [ Ninety-Six pitch, made two scores and f was put out once, the best record on the other side. Abbeville played eight innings and Ninety-Six the nine. Thus * ended this interesting game,- the score , standing twenty to six in favor of Ab1 bcvillc. Everything passed off satisfactorily to both sides. The score-by innings stood as follows : Abbeville ?1 0 4 0 3 1 8 3...?To. 20 _ Ninety-Six?0 2 0 1 0 0 0 2 1?'' 0 The game was played in one hoiw and fifty-seven minutes, race hors(^ chro nomctur time.
