Watson. 10 South Carolina, and her Advautagci*. This is what Colonel McClnro lias to say of South Carolina. Wc commend it to the attention of those who are disposed to sock other fields of labor. "South Carolina is little behind her M.siur. ueorgia uouuuess rank!* next to North Carolina in the race for recovered prosperity, but South Carolina is close J upon th? heels of both, ami with graver obstacles to overcome. Her loss in property by '.he war, including the property value of slaves, was greater in proportion to the population than than ihnt of any other State in the I'nion, ami the very refinement of carpet-bag theft ai?d humiliation was reserved as her destiny. She had not only the graver problem to solve of an overwhelming majority of the most ignorant blacks suddenly clothed with every attribute of citizenship, and with scarcely the shadow of property or appreciated responsibility, but she had the deepest rooted Southern sectionalism to master and the teachings and traditions and generations to unlearn. WHAT SOUTH CAItOLIXA HAS HONK. Hut the Palmetto State has made the grandest progress during tlie last eight aim, Olllllllll^ IIIU lieail II rCCKOHOU for slaves, she is richer to-day titan ever before, ami with abundant evidence that tlte era of development of intelligent buUnestt progress ami of rapidly multiplying wealth is just beginning its j;reat work, it is naturally the richest State of the whole Union, without any exception. It has the best soil, with every advantage lor its most profitable cultivation of any part of the South, and the people who have been horn upon it. and who have lived in Iho luxury of superabundance and again felt the poverty of helplessness are just now mastering tho prOblrttJ that a Yankee, compelled to lie ayrake at night to invent a method to gel hi* pork and beans or pumpkin pie, I Would have mastered in an hour. There 1 .... i? no uiimt pun of iii<> rsoiilli wUore so littlo li\l>or will 'produce so much, but with the richest uplands skirting the Illuc llidge and with tiiree fourths of the Stute adapted to corn, South Carolina has et?:r been a buyer of bread. She " should have five times her present population and !?< able to fited it from her own fields without impairing her more valuable crops of cotton and rice, and evoiy pound of her cotton could be more profitably spun and woven on her own - superabundant water power, than any - other-place on the continent. The new VlSiouth whispers of thcRe achievements, and that is why the Sister Carolitias are more hopeful and more prosperous today than at any time since they sumr inoned tho angel of sorrow to shadow . j i.
