D. SMITH LIVELY TIME The Crowd Whooped 'Em Up for | Quite a While When This Happened (Special to The Intelligencer.) Aikcn, July 14.?The- continued culm of the campaign for State of fice was rudely hroken when scenes of dtrordcr were enacted by a crowd of probably 1,000 people here today following the denunciation of United Stales Senator .Ellison D. Smith, by John G. Richards, candidate for gov ernor, rhortly before an othcrwoihe quiet meeting was brought to a close. Factional Interest was aroused to a high pitch when Richards made his urual declaration in favor of Gover nor Blease for the United States sen ate, which drew prolonged clleorB. He then began reading a statement at tacking the statement credited to Senator Smith that he had raised the price of cotton. Cries of "Hurrah for Smith," Hur rah for Blease," "Hurrah for Rich anls" came from the crowd. "Why did, you - raise the express rates", camo the cry from a man.di rcctly in front of Richards. Lie Passed. "You lie", came the heated reply, from the speaker. I "You are another", replied the un-] known man. who was later learned to be a resident of Blackvllle. When the unknown'm man hurled back luis re pi y, ?tienarus nastily clutched a drinking glass and drew as if to hurl it at the Interrupter. , A large number of excited persons lia: tily scrambled upon the stand and spoke to the crowd attempting, to se cure a hearing from Richards, while j he continually repeated that ho would read his attack on Senator Smith, "if J it takes iiie until night!" After the unknown pian had been escorted from the crowd by a police man, the crowd was filially quieted to ah extent and Richards read his statement. * From John G. Clinkscales' came th> unequivocal statement today that he j is not advocating state-wide- prohi bition. In reply to LioWndcs J> Browning, who called -upon the s par tun burg candidate for a definition of his vhJws. ''1 bollevo South Carolina has Buf fered from the lack of construotlvt legislation because of. th? -imdUi?,agt<J tatioh of - the-liquor question, and 1 favor enforcement of the present law" declared Clinkscales. That state wide prohibition is an issue that should bo brought into the campaign' for governor was' assorted by Charles A. Smith; who advocated | that idea. Several excoriations of the "open lawlessness in this state" was made] by Robert A. Cooper. Richard I. Manning, made state-: mcntf. criticising the manner in which.
