TWO ABOUT PREVENTION OF TslE STEM-END ROT Difficulty Found by Watermelon Growers and How Caused by Fungus EXPERIMENTS IN SUMMER WERE VERY SATISFACTORY Caused by a Fungus Which i Common in Southern Fields. Washington, D. C., Jan.U>.?\V?. teunclon stein rot result J in a deca. oi' the melon, at the stem end, wait usually develops during tranche i market, The nivsetigauons of ti. U. S. Department or Aerkuttur have shown that the cause is a tun gus which is common in many souti ern fields on" dead stalks of cottei corn, and many weeds, as weil as o. decaying melons. The spores of thi fungus are blown about by the wir.t and lodge on the moist cut end of th melon stem alter it is severed 1'ron the vine, germinate, and grow intth.e melon, which often begins to de cay within three days. The experiments made last sum mer on several carloads of melonoffer good hopes that this stem-en v?u mii iw. nr.ivnntod. The method I recommended by the Departing it ol Agriculture are as follows: (1) Cut and burn all weeds around the field and along ditch banks during the winter. 1,2) From the time that the melons set on the vines, all cull fruit should be hauled out of the field weekl} and feu to hoes, or deeply buried. Wash tiro wagons used for hauling culls with a two par cent bluestone solution. (3) Spraying with Bordeaux mixture for anthracnose will probably help control stem-end rot. (4) Laborers harvesting melons should never cut or touch a decayed melon. (5) Cut melons with long stem? and load into cars with the least possible delay and with the utmost care in hand liner, to avoid hmisifiir. Open car ventilators. (6) Most important of al|, apply a paste made of common starch with six per cent bluestone to the freshly cut sterns as the melons are being packed in the car. It has been found that disinfecting the stems at other times is less effective, as tlie paste is nibbed off by handling. As the packer arranges the melons in tiers, have him place the stem t ends outward, while a reliable boy cuts off a section of the stem ar.d applies a covering of paste with a i small, round brush. | (7) Freight cars that have con ' tainerl dceaye 1 melons or yard re , fuse should be washed clean ant' sprayed with a two per cent blue ! stone solution. 1 o Sensitive Throats need careful treatment from within more than they need bundling wraps during changing seasons. On this acre they1 will raise corn to feed their pigs. Tt is important that the parents ;ive the boy whatever assistance is leedcd in the way of good land and earns with which to work their crop.1 Don't shove off on him the poorest icrc of land on the farm. Give him the best. And don't stop there. Give him the benefit of your experience in growing corn by advising with him about eve'-y little thing concerning corn growing.
