SnUrsd At lh<> I'ait Office at Conway, 8. in - >n?l Mattor. rtlURSDAY ,J A N 22th ion t Wii 11kviM.r.'iind Columbus county in mir sister State oujjht to support a jjood county paper. A few months since, the proprietor of the Columbus Press had to suspend pub location, as ! o found that to continue it. meant pecuniary loss. A n w paper has'been started, under the name of "The News" and we hope for it better success. It would not puzzle one to name the causes which kept Conway standing in one place (to allow the expression) for >o manv vnurs. Hon sidering the age ol the town, it i* strange to some who are not acquainted with the facts, that up to a*vorv few years ago. the place made so little progress. It is useless for us to name these causes here Any man of ordinary intelligence can think them up for himself. Much has hcen accomplished in the pest few years but there is yet much to be done. It is not often that we take the liberty of saying a word of a personal nature in our editorial column, but with the permission of our readers we wish to state in the beginning of this year, so full of bright prospects for our town and county, that, as we have ever tried to do in the past, we shall endeavor to run this paper for the best interest and wcllfaro of the people. We never make any claims for the credit of any great accomplishments, we leave the people to judge us in every respect. We can or.ly say that we have been conscientious in the discharge of duty and in the future this shall be our watchword. We are thankful for the patronage that we received during the year that is past and gone. We will try to merit the patronage of the entire people during the present year, by making the up building of our town and county our highest aim. If the account of the deplorable affair given in the public prints is correct, and we have no reason to doult it, there never happened a more dastardly deed than the shooting of Editor Gonzales by Jas. II. Tilman, on the public street in Columbia last week. It was the cowardly act of a desperate man. Had it been done last year, just after the publication of certain editorial utterances in the State, the act would have rceched less eensur. though it would in no manner ha\ been excused. If. by the disclosure in his newspaper, Gonzales hat ! anything to do with the defeat ol Jas. H. Tilman, for the office highest in the gift of the people; then ho certainly did our State a great service, for which the people of the State will never forget him. Hut while we admire the grit of t he man, and appreciate every service he has rendered our commonwealth, yet, in his public denunciation of Tilman, he went too far. He could have warned the people, could have accomplished all that he has accom plished, without descending to low and almost vulgar epithets. Here he made his mistake. - DIEDDeath has entered o>u* midst and taken Oscar Holmes, who was horn on Jan. 19th. 1879. and departed this life on Jan. 8th, 1903. He was afflicted four yens, but never com plained. He leaves a father, mother, two brothers, and four sisters besides scores of loving friends. His remains were interred at Good Hope bury in# ground. Always kind, he was cheerful down to his last moments We submit all to the heavenly father who doe th all things well. !\ A Fill END. Tue farmers generally are getting a hustle ?n, preparing tobacco beds, clearing land, and fencing land, preparing for a large crop, and we hope that God will bless their labors with a bountiful yield. Mr. Editor, we hope that the people of the county will be more united this year in helping to build up a market in Conwav that will coin pete with any market in the State, for tobacco, cotton and all other country produce. Miss Nannie Hays, recently closed a very successful term? of ^school here. Why should a farmer lie educattcd? At the present time, there is no vocation that can be succect fully followed without an education. As the welfare of the country depends upon the farmer, it is necessary for a farmer to be educated, so that he may know when to market his products, and how to till the soil. Two purposes of an education are, that one may become useful, and that he may derive more pleasure from life. One reason why so many farmers fail to .nake a success is because of their ignorance of how to farm. n - a uv.y raise corn or wheat or any >ther grain on the same land year after year and this wears out the il. Fanning is becoming more id more of a science and therefore more and more requires an education. It is very necessary to know the laws governing the cultivation of the soil, fertilizing the soil with bone dust or whatever is used, and the rotation of crops. A great deal depends on a knowledge of machinery. The farmers should know how to properly run their machines, and they should know that the'McCormiek machines are the best, with whieh to cut their grain and grass. We would like to hear from some of the farmers on this subject. I\ Adrian Items. Rev. L. S. Root.)) tilled bis appointment at Maple last Sunday.
