The public is cordially 'nvited to all these . meetings. We have done our best to give patrons of Tiik Homtv Hkhai.d nn acceptable paper during the year of 1889. Will you show your approval j by sending us at least one new sub- j scriber for 1890. * It has been well said that there are two reasons why some people don't mind t hoi r < .tvti linluinoca niin iu it..it they haven't any business, and the other is that they haven't any mind. Mr. J. W Powell has organized a small veterinary class, but, by Q^n- j , sent, will postpone the instruction t* j some future day, Iu the meantime,) any one desiring to join the class can ! do so. -Two gentlemen passing between Reaves Ferry and Asa Royals found thirty dollars in Confederate money and gave out word that anybody swearing to the loss and place of money when found should roceivo it. H2&D Mr. II. Witcover, agent of the InHj terstate Building and Loan AssociaH| lion, cf Columbus, Ga., was in town HB last week and organized an Association with over three hundred shares. The following officers wore elected: C. P. Quattlebaum, President; K. If. j Beaty, Secty., and Treasurer; W. K. Lewis4D. T. EcNeill, J. M. McKeithan, E. Norton and B. G. Collins, Directors. Any one desiring shares should apply to the Secrotary, This Association lends money at 6 per . on approved real estate security. \ A Telegfam rocelved hore on Monday morning announced the pleasing intelligence that the Burroughs School, the Wine and Clerk's salary bills ware safe, The first bill Incorporates the Burroughs School giving fo ihe Trustees fhe power to confer certain degrees upon the graduates of the School and prevents the sale of intoxicating liquors within one mile. 1 he second t V , bill prohibits manufacturers of domestic (gg , '^ lnes from selling wine" at any place except whero made; that Is, a man caivtmake ill ] wine on his farm and bring to Conway, or J Loris, or any other place where people I congregate, to sell; it must be sold where made. This is our information and tho bill applies to Marlboro, Marion and !(<>r ry. The third bill Ktves a salary of three hundred dollars to the Clerk of Court in addition to the foes for recording, &c., In another column will be seen the result of the election for judge board of agriculture, Clemson College trustrees, &e. The election is very satisfactory. The persons elected to the different positions are* perhaps, as competent and well-fitted for the discharge of the duties of the oflices to which they have been chosen us any that could have been selected, but we do think the legislature made a mistake in electing Jaines Aldrich judge of the 2nd Circuit, lie may be as competent, nay more competent than any of hi>> competitors, but the point of objection lies against the manner of his selection. Quite a howl is raised against President ,Harrison for appointing liis relations to responsible and lucrative oflices and yet the legislature of South Carolina allows tl./l *?.? 41.. .1 t A A _ - 1 - ? t nit- jnugi: i>i m?? *>iiu i in un in Ht'U'l'l IMS nephew as his successor, and formally and legally ratifies the selection. Judge A. I'. \ id rich did not hesitate to electioneer for iiis nepnew as his successor and it seems tin* old man's influence whs sufficient to win over a majority of the legislature. We think the legislature should have rebuked this effort ?.f an incumbent to dictate to the legislature his successor in such severe and unmistakabla terms as to forbid its repetition in the future. JKFFKRTON DAVIS spent the last year of his life in literary work. Me wrote an article on Andorsonvillo for tho North American Review, exonerating the Confederate Government from the charge of wanton cruelty toward Federal prisoners. On the publication of his reply to Lord Wolseley in North American Review (which, Mr. Davis charo ;d, was mutilated by the American editor in tlie intorost of the Dullish Government), Mr. Davis refused to permit the North American to publish his article on Andersonvilie unless the editor should a^roo to publish it u.'imutilated. The editor refused ?^ive that pledge. Mr. Davis thereupon withdrew his article and transferred it to ItetfonVn Magazine. It will appear in the January number. In the same issuo Bolford's will publish a brief autobiography of Mr. Davis, written a short time ago- A few weeks before his death Mr. Davis completed for the Bolford Company '-A Short History of the Confederate States." It will be issued at an early date. Steward's Meeting. Tho board of Stewards for Conway Circuit, are requested to meet at tho I'ursonage in Conway, on Monday tho (3th of Jan., 183)0 at 12 o'clock. II. M. IIahdkn, P. C. Life of ifcflcrNon I>avi.s. We have just received from the publish-1 ers a very full and comprehensive l>ook under the title, Life and Death of Jefferson Davis, gi dug a full history of hiseventful life and death, together with Funeral Services, also comments of the press from all parts of the country* It will ho sent postpaid to any address on receipt of 25 cents, by J. S. Oon/viK, the publisher, 57 Hose ht., New York, who also desire agents to sell it. Merry Christmas to All! A Merry Christnies to all ! Christinas is regarded as a, season of merriment and pleasure, when "peace and good will" should characterize every act. Let the season be observed in this spirit and humanity will fool better for it. In feasting and rejoicing, remember the poor, the afllicted and the unfortunate, and minister unto their wants and necessities. Carry consolation to the be reaveu and comfort to tlie cheerless! If kind words never dio, kind deeds will not only l>e immortal, but bless the doer. Remember too that you cannot porform a better service to a friend who has been so unfortunate as not to be a reader of Tiik Horry Hkkat.t> than to induce him to subscribe for it. Your conscience will approve "the performance of such a kindly act and richly repay you for it, for you will have conferred a lasting benefit on your friend. Make your Christmas holiday then bright and glorious by sending in one new subscriber to Tiik Houry Hkrald, Just as you are pleased at finding faults, you are displeased at finding perfections.
