January 16, 1902 THE:LUTHERAN VISITOR 9 ship Ood with their gifts also. When children are not trained to give as a part of worship, need it be a matter of surprise that as ac tive members in later years they attempt to worship Him without an offering. As training is neces sary in securing regular attend ance, so training must not be for gotten that the future generation may be lacking in no part of wor ship. We wish the congregation abundant success in this new de parture and long for the time when more congregations will incorpor ate both of these ideas in their plans for Christian service. Rev. D. P. T. Crickenberger, for merly serving most acceptably in the Virginia Synod, has been in bis new held at DuBois, Pa., since February 14, 1901, where the cor diality with which he was greeted by his people has extended through- out the year. His work has borne fruitful results in 27 accessions to the congregation—nearly all of the new members being heads of fami lies and prominent citizens—with two catechetical classes numbering 39 members now under instruction, and confirmations among them to take place at Easter. Many ex pressions of good will have been shown Pastor Ciickenberger. Twice has the congregation made him do nations of considerable value in substantials and at Christmas the oouncil made him a very handsome gift On New Year’s day the con gregation met and voted an increase of $100 in his salary, to take effect January 1st—all done unanimously and without previous knowledge or solicitation of the pastor. Such evidences of appreciation, together with the existence of unity and harmony in the congregation, make much for the welfare of the Mas ter’s cause. The past year has been one of some degree of success in the Master’s work. There have been accessions to tlie membership in all the con gregations, and the people are growing in piety and cburcblinese. Frieden’s and Bridgewater Sun day-schools held very appropriate Christmas services. On Christmas eve the Bridgewater Sunday-school, under the leadership of Prof. Hul- vey, the superintendent, and the pastor’s wife, held a very interest ing service, consisting of songs and recitations appropriate to the sea son—a real churchly service. The Christmas packages for each scholar were uniform. The church was beautifully and tastefully deco rated. On the day after Christmas Frie den’s Sunday school held a service under the j nnt direction of the Reformed and Lutheran superin tendents, Mr. Turner Craun and Bro. S T Shank Here there were two beautiful trees laden with gifts —a good treat for each scholar tastefully arranged. The school rendered a service issued by one of our publication houses, and the Lutheran and Reformed pastors made short talks. On New Year’s night the Worn an’s Missionary Society of Frie den’s congregation held a public meeting, the younger members de livering recitations and reading essays on missions The music was furnished by a special trained choir under the direction of Pqpf. White- sell. The collection amounted to $7. The pastor has been remembered by these kind people who know how to take care of their pastor. St. John’s and Freiden’s congrega tions presented the pastor with a very fine suit of clothes—a very handsome Christmas present in deed May God bless these kind donors and give them a prosperous New Year from beginning to end. Unity and concord abide with us and there is harmony between pas tor and people. We have a class of catecheumens ready for con- grmation at Easter. Yours fraternally, W. B. Oney. There are two features of interest in the three additions to the roll this week. One is the liberal gifts of the pastors, and the other is the voice from St. Martin’s, a shep- berdless flock. The indications are that with the opening of the year there is an awakening of interest in this cause among the churches not yet enrolled. We have the promise of reports from various quarters.
