We see it stated in the pupers that tpe California Fish Commission havo prooured a largo number of blaok bass and turned thora looso in tho German carp infested rivers in tho hone that they will destroy tho carp. If they succeed wo think our Fish Commission should get a lot and turn them loose in Pee Deo if they would preserve tho shad and red horse, which aro fast bo coming depopulated in this river, once noted for its supply of both, especially tho rodhoreo, so much relished by our peoplo. Tho carp will never becoino as popular as tho shad or red horse and tho soonor we get rid of them tho bjttor. THE BENEF?T OF GOOD ROADS. Through tho kindness of Hon. C. S. McCall wc have received a copy of tho | Houston, Texas, Post with a full ro port of tho "Good Roads Convenli?n" I of thut Stato, held at Galveston on tho 10th and 11th. From tho discussion reported aud the various letters rend, wo fake it that Texas is now wide awake on the subject of good roads Two years ago tho fever for good roads in South Carolina warmed up to a call for a State convention and there it onded. While all admit the benefit to be derived io thc wear and tear of vehicles and saving of horso flesh thero is no concert of action and tho ] whole matter is thrown upon theshoul dors of tho county Supervisors who arc ] oxpected, without oven a fair co-opo ration on tho part ol tho laud owners j to aid them, to keep up tho roads. Th?8 is all wrong and a remedy has been s-uggestcd by ono of our public spirited men and an enthusiast on this burning question of importance to the people of Marlboro. It is this, that a county convention of dolcgatcs from ench township desiring better roads to moot at Bennottsville and organize for cooperation with tho supervisor in putting every road in tho couuty in good condition. Tho suggestion com mends itself, and with such an organ jzation complaints against the plowing in the roads or placing obstiuclions would cea&e. Tho supervisor would feel he had power, willi the co-opera tion of the people to back him, to go to work and giyo us hotter raads every where. It cannot bo done without public co-operation. Talk it up and issuo tho call at once. Wo shall havo moro to say next week. BT.T.T/ Iii V Ji-iW.Ul'i n- lij Next Friday Night. (Brick) Pomeroy," wo know well and inlimattly. At tho feet of this groat apostlo of journalism wo eat and learned many things that in after lifo proved of incalculable benefit to us, of which otherwise, wo cou'd never have known. Prominent muong those lessons was that of sobriety. Ho cou? tended that man, no matter how brill inntly endowed, could ever attain to success in any department of life that polluted his lips with tho accursed elixer of hell-that became a devotee at tho shrine of Bacchus. To this wc aro prepared to say amen 1 Truthfulness was one ot his bright, shining characteristics. No ono ever thought of accusing our friend of false hood or *he evasion of truth, We have often heard him give expression to these words: "Toll tho truth let the consequences bo what they may; if a lie would pay thousands and with it tho tw i tellings of a guilty conscience, 1 had rallier tell tho truth and eigoy tho sweet com fort of God's approving smile." As a reformer, he was ono of tho foremost. Ile never hesitated to attack vice in any garb. The corrupt although dressed in purple and lino linen felt tho keen cut oi his saber of truth and fell before its mighty stroke. 'Ho was a Domocrat in the truest senso of tho term, und neyer censed to do battle, for the glorious principles embodied in tho teachings of that great apostle of pure democracy-Thomas J effcrson ; in fact this man "Brick Pomeroy" was thc father of tho first movement after thc war lo rehabilitate and placo on a solid basis the democracy of our fathers, and to continuo unimpaired the con Stituliobnl rights of Amt rican citizens His success was tho salvation of our country from tho despotic rule o? am bitious and unprincipled demagogues whoso oniy aim was to subveit tho rights of tho masses, making thom sub sor vient to tho diclational and oppres sive edict of au element which sought to crush out tho lust spark of Ameri can manhood. Let no American, and especially Southern man, forget the good offices of this mighty vindicator of tho secured rights of tho people. Let us follow his teachings and exam ple, and tho dark and threatening clouds ihnt now lower about our po litical horizon will soon be dissipated, and tho bright sun of peace and pros perity will onco nguiu shed his life giving rays throughout our entire country.
