Canada ot Pino Qrove, December 18.93.. MY FniKNDS This- subjbot of Sunday school work is one of grout magnitude, and as far remcliing in its results as chris tianity itself. But we shall not attempt to take the broad sweej), which it allows, for fear of tho tax upon your patience. .We wish merely to call your attention to tho fact, that the Sunday school, with its modern idea of the whole church study ing the Word of God, and with its improved methods of Bible research and exposition, fur nishes tho best and most elli oient antedate against the grea t home and foreign evils that ore cursing us as a nation, that can be found aside from the preach ing of the gospel. Although originally instituted f or ' tue mental and moral training of the children on the Sabbath, a work productive of suoh good results could not and should, not be con fined to any age or condition. The Sunday sohool of to-day has assumed astonishing pro portions. It is a leinarkable fnctin-tho history of the church, that one ^of the loveliest stars in the luminous constellation ol the christian system, remained comparatively unnoticed for nearly eighteen hundred years after the establishment of the church, iii the world. That star is the rich provision made by the great head of thc church for the religious training of the children; and as we look into the moral heavens tooday this star of the Sujnday sohoo' meets, pyx vision in uits modes gems iii the brilliant coronal en circling the brow of Jesus*. Aye it shines outa noble vindication of the claims of christianity over all the religions of ?lit world. I have thought iii contempla ting tho signs of tho contest be tween the church and the work: of to day, that if the Holy Spir it were to commission twelve men to accomiilish any sinritua work in the conversion and sal vation of mankind, the estnb lishnient and constantly Increas ing interests of the Sunday school would occupy a grea deal of their time an^ attention This remark is intended as n< disparagement of the grand anc beniiicent 'schemes of the mod ern church for the universal ex tension and establishment o the Redeemer's kingdom; but on the contrary, we would mos heartily and cordially bid then God-speed, and hail them as co workers in the great enterpris< of evangelizing the world. To my mind tho church ha no interest more paramount am of greater importance than th institution of the Sunday school and she has none which lays Juster claim upon her purse,'he intellect and her heart than thi noble and fostered institutio which sho may so proudly ea] her own. Tho Sunday school in its pr mary relation to the church ha been aptly called the nursery c the church, whore by propc training and culture the divin truth may get the start of th spontaneous growth of huma depravity; and where the sir cere mith of the wprks is admit istered'tp nourish and strengtl en the soul in its battle for otei nal lifo. The Sunday school has ale been justly called the drill-root of Christ's army, whore thoi is the practice necessary for tl activo warfare of a life of righ eousness. "And tho church mil to a great extent rely upon th institution for her most valiai warriors and hermostintelligei and devout membership. Indeed all denominations re ognize this as the most potei factor in their upbuilding ali perp?tuation; and. tho denom nation that does not employ th means for recruiting its ranks fast losing its hold and givii place to those that educate the '? vi'.'1 .'? : . ! I am M>jp?ared." ^\say that, next to 'tho-??i Aclama tum from tho pul r>?fc:|lf >sus Christ, the Sunday SclioQ 'furnishes tlie best means for interacting the soul-pois oni. poul-polluting influences of a torts of home and trans-at hintid optic^si?i'iiiVd infidelity, to be\< jud in all tho remedies of i*ni Jeal christianity. And to-an'Mtho deadly poison of this foreigffihepticisinand infidelity MIUI ivw-the varied forms of for eign ^'l.inents unfriendly to our holy-;,^ligion that are pouring in cv ?" swelling streams upon our. sh J?Sft must cause every tho??j?f ul Christian to cry out: Wherein heaven's name, may a re?r? .(y.ibe found to stay and drivo?Ok. this sickening, elUu viumv&?m tlie body of death? ?nd jj?nmswer to tills imx>ortant questi(^;we would say, with all tlie 'dui, 'nd confidence be longing .iy that' the Sun day s' ..i-that God-blessed riglit-ai'ii of the clnirch-is heav v?n's last remedy. A French infidel ^philosopher was once heard fe'remark that if he had nlbthowliildren oC France under his spcoial training until they were tim years old he would make llie nation infidel. The tru tho? this assertion is evident to'ever^ thoughtful iierson. y$ . ...if.olJi^ojit. nqo of tho. world of raro literary produc tion, we have books that furnish a complete refutation of the fal lacies bf infidelity; but these books, though of a high literary merit,. mi; that very reason, are above ;. ..ie reach of the masses and uro found in the hands of only a few; while the squibbles of thei Spencers, Huxleys and Paynes are blown-flush as au tumn leaves upon the youth of our laud, like a red-hot blast from tiile regions of moral death. But tho Sunday school well, ap pointed and directed by deeply pious and consecrated officers and teachers, pours a constant stream ii tlie Water of Life upon these fi L*es of perdition. And I say it ii iihesitatingly, in the feat of God and with due regard to man, that if the great evils of this An lerican nation which, like the fabled bat of Madagascar: fan her to sleep while they arc sapping her life blood, are evei subduefl and eradicated fron Church! and State, this happy result lmust be accomplished Dj the modest, unsullied hands o: tho Sunday school. If wo woulc" save our nation from hell-pol luted elements cast among us we must necessarily instill ir the mir.jds and plant deep in tin hearts of tho children of. to-daj tho principles of our holy roll gion; all of-which are faithfull? taught jin the Sunday school. Tho Sunday school, with th< Holy Bible as its text book, prc poses ia take il, children mt< the sacred precincts of its mora and religious teaching, and eas their minds in the mould whicl tlie 1Mb le has prepared, and trail thom lip iii the way they shouk go so t)joy-will remember thei Croatorv in the days of thei youth; utnd, above all, to lea< them to tho cross of Christ, nn< assist thom to twine the tendril of their affections around its titi perishable beams. Furthermor tho Sunday school does not ceas its labels with the salvation p tho children at their conversion but set* before their minds am impresses upon their hearts th highest/objects of faith and hop and love, and assists thom i tho formation of habits of virtu so that.'thoy may bo prepared t perform- with Christian patienc the duties thatmay devolve upo theui,an?d may be fully qualifie for a lit? of usefulness. It io an admitted fact by a v ' * ' )'.'. * eminent educators, that the minc of the child is susceptible o training. In fact the child is r rphilosopher in embryo. His mind is always on the stretch tc know the nature and reason oi things. The ohild believes ir the invisible as well as the visi ble, the ideal as well as the real He is ready to grasp and retail: designs and to run back along the lines of reason to the design, forward to the destiny of every object) and the only thing to sat isl y his mind and to save him if to give him a truthful answer tc Iiis inquiries. With a child re ligjious" truth is ns readily re coi ved as any other, provided il be presented in an attractive manner. But he soon turin away in disgust from the igno rant,-indifferent teacher of invis ible and past and future events to tho present and visible, ant ceases to trouble himself aboul what he imagines nobody un ilerstands because Ins teachei lid not. Let me say, in this connection that I.believe that a great clea :>f the lack in interest and fail are of results, in a great mani Sunday schools, is caused b) the unpardonable ignorance anc i ndolence of multitudes Of teach 3rs. They have a name to liv,? md be teachers, brit are cleat md can be nothing but barrel (ig-trees with nothing but leaves The Sunday school, in tin Literary age, calls for* men win ire well instructed in the Bibi? md full of Holy Ghost power Men and women to work witl souls aiire with the love of God md with an eye fixed upon th unfading glories of the resurrec bion morn, when eaoh officer an< tfirto? ihnd pilbil.w! viao ; * everlasting habitations of jo;? md happiness or sink into etei ial perdition, misery and woe If we would save our natioi trom Anarchism, Socialism, Rc nanism, the rum curse, the sa loon power, and all kindred e viii tve must oppose to them th most talented and consecrate" men and women in our Sunda schools.
