Tl turo waa received at tho treasury deportment one of tho most peculiar banknotes overseen among tho millions upon millions of oUrroiiOy notes printed by tho government. It wa? a $20 note or a ?10 note, just according to which aldo was up, for by nomo remarkable mistake tho ono sido was printed with tho figures and devices of a $20 bill, whllo tho other had all tho figuren mid devices of a $10 bill. Tho noto was returnod to tho treas ury by tho cushier of tho First Wash ington National bank of Jersey City, who sent lt with a rather sarcastic note, intimating that his bank was not going into tho freak business, and added that as tho treasury had counted that bill for $20 ho would troublo them to send him an ordinary $20 note. The altair created u sonu?ion, for no one had ever seon such a wonderful note before. Tho matter was referred to the depart ment of issue, from which the note had been sent out to the Jersey City bank. Tho mistake was promptly corrected and nn immediate investigation begun. The Investigation was prosecuted with vigor, and Con. Meredith found the cause of the trouble, lt scorn's that tho four notes printed on a sheet are not all of ono denomination. There ure always three of ono kind and the lourth ol another; tims, in this ease, three tens and a twenty, lt was au easy task to learn just when this bun diu had been printed, and by which plato printers. They were examined, and it. developed that ono stiebt of foot notes, after having been printed on one side, luid fallen olT thy bundle to the tloor. Tho assistant who picked it up by some Unfortunate oversight turned the sheet upside down when she placed it on tho bundlo. Tho rest ls easily understood. This sheet was printed on tho second side with a. 20-faoo on tho reverso of a ten, and one of the three 10-faee on tho re verse of the ono 20 of tho steel. Hence there woro two "10 20s" hi tho lot, Thus tho mistake was corrected. But no good explanation was offered, or can o offered, why these t wo bills, passing through a score of bunds, each ono Of whom is supposed to examino pvory bill most carefully, should not have been dlsecV'-'ivd. Fi very person in tho bureau who handles a note is hold responsible in .-.ho strictest way, and it Is almost in ! srediblO that nono of those people should have discovered tho mistake, In tho department of Issue tiro not lea? than six counters, whose business ?thus boon for years to count the notes bo fore Issuing them to tho banks. They uro considered the most export counters in tho world, and yet all six of these Londorf ul experts allowed such a bill Ul pass through their hands. No trace ?is been found of tho soeond hybrid. . > that it must bo wandering around tito country. Tho two notes will bo kept in tho treasurer's office as curios ?tics.-baltimore Hun. Tho result of all tho tests gave for tho average tensile strengths of ropes tho following: White hemp, 10,500 to 11,200 pounds per square inch; tarred hemp, 7,700 to 8,400; whito manila, 11,800 to 10,600; white aloes, 5,000 to 7,000; lint tarred hemp and manila, 7,800 to 8,100.
