SQBSCR1PT10I, $1.50 PER AKIU1. ' Camden, S. CV I>ec. 19tli 1007. THE 60th COGRESS. t ?" The 60th Congress of thijse * United States is uow in session. What will it do? What is it called u|x>n to do? What it will do is problematical. What it is called tj do is to relieve the existing Stringency in money matters, 10 take from the backs of the in dustrial population the burden of that great death, excessive ) protection, to so revise our present tariff laws that each aud ever,y cihzen of the country shall [ only be tariff laxed in the de gree that a tariff, whether high ? or low. will bear fairly equally upon the producer, the con sumer ami the mau of affluence whose wealth lias been ac quired either by inheritence, or, by virtue ot business perspicuity rendered possible of active force through the iuxness of the laws governing our business system. These are all sound propositions. There is not a man of bruin any where who will dispute them. HUT, here comes in an illus tration of that luuious legand of the (laming sword, held aloft in mid air over a people dead to conscience, and dead to God. That warning was unheeded. Another. We have it in Holy W i'it that, on an occasion of jubilation in one of the ancient cities, during a banquet given by the rulers of a certain pro s' vince, on the wall there was noted a hand which inscribed the words, 4,Meue, Me ue, x Tekel Upharsin. " For the benefit of t those who do not read the Bible, we will say that these words be ing interpreted into English are "Thou art weighed in the bal ance and found wanting." So will.it be with the Republican majority in the Congress at this session, and at the next elect iou, with the help of God, we hope to sweep the whole nest of them off the map as factors in our Rational government. ENCOURAGING BLIND TI GERS. Our attention has been called to a recent practice in Dispen sary and Police circles of clos ing the doors of the Dispensary , from a quarter to a half an hour before closing time because of the throng of patrons within the building at that time, (the time the doors were closed, and not ? the legaljjhour of closing.) This action is taken, wo are given to understand oecauso of the dis order which either prevails on Saturday eveniug, or which it is apprehended will occur. I t strikes us that that is distinctly a violation of the Carey -Coth/an Jaw. There are numerous pa trons of the dispensary law and the dispensary whose business detains them from the street fully a hull an hour before the legal hour. These peo ple, to our U.iowleJge, are law abiding, at. I ?ast a majority of them Why should they be de prived of either a stimulcnt which the v consider necessary to their system, or, a medi cine for their families because of an unreasonable rule, which is warranted neither by law or which tends to the pro motion of law and order? There is notrxcuse for it. The citj can afford to swear 111 an adequate number of police officers to see that order is maintained on busy days both within and without the dispensary, aud it is the duty of our, police commission so to do. Individually, we don't care a snap, but we do believe in the laws being observed, and if this new rule is dictated by municipal authority, we want to know how any municipal rule can rise above a statute ol' tho fcJtate Legisla ture m [ Tui4 iu.c, la our mind is a left handed encouraging, of bling tigerism, and us such should be abolished. It is a simple mutter (6 place two ex Ira policemeu in the dispensary lobby wtieu neces sary to maintain order and in. ciden tally to clear the lobby of ; those who have been served, thus clearing the place for ihe entrance of others. These po licemen can be secured at slight I cost which the increased profits will more than defray. HARRY THAW'S SISTER WANTS A DIVORCE. The above is the caption from a recent Associated Press Dis patch from London. As the caption shows, the woman in the case is a sister of Hurry Thaw, and the presumed wife of the Earl of Yarmouth. Mrs. Yarmouth appears to thiulc that the matter of marriage between herself and the Earl was only presuuiptiou, her grouud of ac tion' against Mr. Yarmouth be ing a contention that there was no marriage. This is a rich one. Xo Mar riage when we are informed that the couple have been living to gether as man and wife for several years, and so far as we know have issue .from the con nection. If the claim of the Countess is not sustained in the English courts, she may repent in sack-cloth and ashes that she didn't come to South Carolina, and to the office of The People to have herself tied up to her titled supposed mate. We would have fixed them proper. This is merely preliminary. There are no doubt worthy rep resentatives of the ancient no bilily of Europe, a union with whom, whether male or female, would raise the social standing of auy person or family of this country, and such unions are to bo commended, but this indis criminate barter of person and property of our young women of wealth to dissolute scions of the effete nobility of the old coun try for the eclat of a .name should be frowned upon by the heads of every self respecting American family. We have in mind numerous instances of un happiness resulting from these international mar; iages, and we think it is about time for Ann ri cun parents to take stock. Is the game worth the candle? Will you continue to sacrifice the young lives and happiness of your daughters, upon t|>e alter of pride which represents a con nection with a titled debauchee of Europe, or, will you allow them to form a healthful family connection with one of their own faith and order in this country? This is a simple question. As for our self, we have 110 halluci nation. America for Americans is our motto, and the term in cludes wife, husband, home and a reasonable prospect of happi ness.
