"The crack of the whip. " It is every where ? it. is all the time. It breaks tlio pence and stillness of these autumn days, and far into the night its cruel sound tells of suffering none the less pitiful, because we cannot sep the pa tient, shrinking creatnre thit grieves beneath the lash. Do you hear it friends? "The crack of the whip. " Or has its hateful sound become so a part of the street's life that it passes unnoticed? Listen to it then ? and listen ing, pity ? and pitying, act, for surely something can be done here in beautiful Camden towards creating a sentiment that revolts at "the crack of the whip," bo cause its sound stands for cruol ty; because its sound stands for brutality; because it. makes cal lous to suffering, the. hearts of the youth, who hearing, imitate. Ifhe teamster raining blows upon a defenceless horse ' or .jntile, is imitated by the inuoceut faoed boy in his cart drawn by a tipy goat. When the over loaded pantyng little creature's strength faililft it is lashed unmercifully ? aud why . not? All his little life the- boy ha? heard "the crack of the whip."' It is music to bis baby ears- Every step of his progress from childhood to man hood has for its accompaniment the sound that hardens the heart. Look friends, at the horses that are driven through our streets. Many are well kept, strong, sleek, the pride of owner or driver, and the blood runs faster as we watcli their splen did pace. But look again, friends at these others following. These, the worn out, the feeble with age; their sides are scarred with tiie spur, their , bones are j almost protruding, but patient, ! sad-eyed, hungry, they |>lod their weary rounds and ever in their drooping ears, the harsh, discordant cry and crack of whip. Oh friends! The world Will never be bettor as loni? as iikmi's hearts are callous to tlio suffer ing of the dumb servants given into our keeping. There is uo surer way to make it. bettor than to make its groat heart, tender to suffering in any. form, and" one of the first steps towards this end is to make the rawhide an object of aversion, instead of putting its miniature copy in the hands of children. There are great firms today, owning hundreds of horses and mules, whose drivers a?'e never permitted to have a whip. To be seen with one would cost the driver his position. These horses perform their work with a steadiness and intelligence de lightful to behold, and in pleas ing contrast to the useless plung ing and spasmodic straining of n willing team made nervous, rest less, frantic by incessant yells and "the crack of the whip." There are many societies and clubs in Camden, but we need one more, whose members should deem it a privilege to speak for those that suiter and are dumb. "R." #M5 REWARD.
