A rr lean Exploration. Thc explorations of Stanley in the heart of Africa are of thc utmost geo graphical intent-and importance. He is a plucky, clear-headed niau, who pusu ca his way through difficulties hko a steam engine through a snow drift; ami, considering thb delays and slowness of loriner exped? Lions, tho rapidity of jus movetnbnta and thc promptness of his communications are quite remarkable. Ile has too much business on hand to be sick, and is too active and energetic and vigilant to be entrapped by the treacher ous natives or captured hy the malaria. It is (piite evident that thc natives stand in awe of this man, who seems to he r. sort of locomotive in boots, though they shoot his men when out of his sight with out hesitation or remorse, and his two letters came stained with Hie life-blood of one ol' thc Khedive's officers. Stanley has now demonstrated by actual observ ation and surveys that Livingstone, whose health and mind failed in thc last years of his long African sojourn, was mistaken in supposing the Victoria Ny anza was a chain of live lakes connected willi each other, ile linds that Speke, whoso explorations wore made in 18G2, was right in his opinion that the Victoria Nyanzais one body of waler; but what Speke took for two islands Stanley linds are peninsulas in this great inland sea. Phis is undoubtedly thc upper reservoir of the ?il?, and should futuro explor ations confirm thc importance of the | Uiver Shimeeyou we shall have thc key to the whole Nile system, and the mys tery of Africa will bo henceforth an open secret. It is a maller ol'national pride that these final explorations are made hy au American, who, though he follows thc trail of distinguished explorers, seems to have a capacity ol'gathering up the results ol' their discursive discoveries and observations, and combining and correcting them, and supplementing them with original explorations ol' his own, which are quito as important as any that have been made. These African explorations are of vast ly more consequence and practical utility than anything that has been or is likely to he discovered in the Arctic regions, where so much treasure has been spent and so many lives have been thrown away. Africa is not only a puzzle te geographers : it is now a prohlem foi civilization to solve, and throws down it* challenge to tbs statesmanship and hu manity of the globe. It lies in thc high way of eominerccj inviting thc inter course of all nations. I ts fertile soils and saluhrious climates and valuable produc tions give it a vast importance, which i* increased hy its accessibility on all sides. Thc cradle of civilization and the seat ol com merco for centuries, it is now sparse ly peopled, and to all practical intents h a virgin continent inviting immigration and furnishing almost unlimited scope UJ thc enterprise of civilized n an. What shall he done with it and for it arc ques tions which will ask themselves witli increasing frequency and force in coming years. Mr. Dalton has suggested that ai attempt bc made to colonize it will Chinese. Thc plan has plausibility. Il has l>cen found that the Chinese wh< ..ave settled ir. the Oceanic Islands hav< developed quite remarkable faculties o thrift a:)d enterprise ami government1 .-lild-Kave improved considerer, on "tin wm&^ifrPSl inti ttfuV kurov'tf over crowded with population and all bei great cities suffering from an excess ol poor and perishing classes, it certainlj seems that thc key of African civilization need not he sought in eastern Asia anion-; the Mongolian races. It only wants th( ability to organize colonization on l grand scale and carry it out with thc appliances of modern science and artaud the modern spirit of humanity lo make Africa a power in the civilized world and a means of renovating Europe.-Daili? ( Trophic. The Jews. Sonic curious, and in sonic respects, surprising, particulars have lately been collected and published in a French pa per, respecting tho Jews. Although tin Israelites hold such unimportant place in trade, commerce and finance, niiu arc to he met with in every quarter of the world, it appears that they arc to he found in least numbers in some of tin niest commercial countries, and in most numhers in some of thc least prosperous and enterprising stales. Moreover, widely as they arc scattered, and numerous as they appear to be, it seems from the statistics in question that thc census of the whole race falls short of five millions of souls. Iii France, where there exists little or none of the stupid and barba rous prejudice against thc Jews which * prevails Ju some countries, and where one would think there was a wide field for the peculiar talents of thc race, there aro only'40,000 Jews. In America, ap parently a still more favorable country, there are only one hundred and twenty thousand Israelites. On the other hand; in wretched, unprosperous and down trodden Poland tho Jews are to he found in greatest number, one out of every seven of the inhabitants being a Hebrew. One can understand that there should he a few Jews in Spoin, but it ii! surprising they should lie almost as rare in Belgium. In Sweden there are, comparatively few Jews, but they abo'uud in Hamburg, Austria, and Roumahiain the proportion of one to every twenty-four inhabitants. In Hamburg and Austria there is abun dant employment for their talents, but in lloumania there cannot lie any great Bcoji? for their commercial and financial instincts. Ireland always boasts of being the only country in tho "world in which tho Jews were never persecuted-and, indeed, whether itt homo or abroad, the Irish always manifest a certain respect for tho Israelites-but Ireland has hardly liad the opportunity of persecuting the race, for even ot the present day there are not three hundred Jews in the whole country, Norway stands lowest on the list, after Ireland, thero only being twenty-five Jews in that coinitrv. An interesting addition- to these statistics (if it wcro possible to secure it) Would be tho amount of wealth in the hands of thc less than five millions of Jews that " abido upon, if they do not inherit tho earth. Considering the enormous wealth possessed by only-it few well-known indi viduals of thc race, such a return would doubtless show a high average per head. Lomlun (?lobe..
