THE TOM H OF CHARLEMAGNE. Ornoo ?Jroemvooil VIHHH? nn?l TOIIH Wliat Nlio .Ni? iv There, nu?l NnmcttilMir of ??* lltetory. We clip tho following from a Cologne letter of tfraee Greenwood to the New York Times : I also made a solitary pilgrimage to thc tomb of Charlemagne, leaving thc train nt Aix-la-Chapnelle, on our way from Urusscls to Cologne. It was the lirst German town I had been in for many years; I knew no German, and had little French at my command; it seemed an adveniurous tiling to do, btit '' accoutered as I was, I plunged in." As the Don, or Munster, seemed near, I thought I had latter walk it than try my lonely luck with a German cab-driver, hut soon got involved in .? labyrinth o?" narrow streets, overhung with quaint, sombreo'd houses, | j curious mis-shapen edifices, which seemed toc?me upon nie round every corner, out of the middle ages, and I was obliged to call in thc aid of both church and state a priest and a policeman-before 1 could lind the entrance of the old, old chapel designed and erected by Charlemagne for his own grand burial place nearly a thousand veal's ago. Around the chapel later additions have been built, and there is a lofty modern choir, nuule almost en tirely of beautiful stained glass, hut these things had little interest for me. 1 only felt that that monarch of monarchs hail stood where I was stand ?hg, planning royally for his own sepulture. I only saw on the marble slab at my feet the brief great inscription, "Caro Magno." I knew he was not resting beneath that slab-that it only marked the spot where once stood his tomb, which ''dread UIXKIC" was broken into by Otto III., and tin" great emperor was lound, not reposing in a collin, but seated in a throne like chair of white marble, arrayed in royal robes, crowned, sceptered, and with his familiar pilgrim's pouch at hts side. On his knees rested a copy of the go'spel's, and at hand, as though ready to defend it, was his favorite sword Joyeuse. There is something awfully grand in such an entombment. Ile had sat liiere in silence and in night for nearly two hundred ye?frs, waiting for the resurrec tion, which came all too soon. The fra grance of rare gums ami spices used in his partial embalmment must have fainted in the mold, and colors of rich silk anti the sheen of gold died out in the dark ness; hut it seems to me that the sleeping light of those crown jewels must have dreamed of thc sun and the east soft trenuilousglcamsdownon the open pages of the word. Ile should have been left there in state, while al lc?st his grand chapel should endure, hut the stone, was rolled away iron? the sepulchre, not by angels, but by hungry relic hunters and saint-mongers, and they laid desecrating and dissecting hands upon him-parted not only his raiment, but his skeleton took him to pieces bone hy bone, and have distributed him about munsters and monasteries. . A dead emperor of that q nidi ty was too much for a chapel of this size to have all to itself. It preserves, however, his skull, the darkened shell ol' an extinct star of sovereignty-a gigantic irliia-the real chair in which he sat, and which was afterward used at. the cor onation of emperors, and the parian sar cophagus in which rested his tired feet all through thal two hundred years' sit ting. This church is marvelously rich in plate, jewels, chalices, shrines and roliq ii.triesof rare and exquisite workmanship, and in relics, the bare list of which il poul ls one asan exhibition of human credulity, superstition and imposition. What an idea of Christ they have who actually helicvc he can he pleased at seeing his people redeemed from olden idolatry, prostrating themselves before the rod w?pch once smote him, the cord that bound him, the nail that pierced him, and even thc blackened and shriveled arni of poor old ?Simon-that arin which bore the smiling infant Jesus in the temple. A very interesting building is the Kat lilians, whicl? dales back to 1353, and was then built on thc site of the old palace in which Charlemagne w.is born. In the Kaiser Saal, a sombre, low-arched hall, the coronation of the emperors used to take place. No lesi than thirty seven, they told me, had there received the crown, seated on the mortuary chair of Charlemagne, tum swearing upon the sacred relics, a curious and ghastly col lection-Christ's leathern girdle, the sponge once wet with vinegar for his dy ing lips, some blood and bones of M. Stephen, some manna from the wilder ness, that arm of old .Simon, and a hit of Aaron's rod. There is a grand new staircase to this hall, and tue.old one has fallen into decay and d?su?tude. The stone, steps of this seemed to nie worn ont hy thc tramping of many, chi perora and their mailed retainers. In spite of some bright modern frescoes, giving the glorious incidents in Charlu magne's Hie, the. air ol this old ?saloon was melancholy and oppressive to me, lilied willi shilling pictures ol' history more gloomy than grand-of those me dievals -monarchs, coining arid going, with a mighty clang of steel and surg ing of banners, and * storm y bursts of music, and taking holy names and awftel oaths ffnon their lips, now and then one resolved on the reign bf justice, burning to do them great, good work for God and the people, but for the most part robbers, usurpers, bigots or itnlieciles. When Albert of Hapsburg took the oath on those holy relics, Simeon's arm should have, seized Aaron'a rod and smitten him there in tho purple. Tho Triumph of Corn-Cob over Meer schaum.. ? How unsatisfactory i.i the possession of a meerschaum pipo ! Supposing you to have secured a line piece-the best piece in the universe, say-you would not he more happy Until miserable. The whole universe seems ieagucd to destroy it. You fear to put it away, lest harm should come to it in your absence ; 'equally do you drpad taking il up, for Ibero is the risk of dropping, scratching, breaking. While smoking it you cat Sously keep on tho morocco ease ; handling would soil th? bowl, and you have herd that the coloring oil evaporates if the pipe be exposed to tho air. The longer and more completely your precautions are success ful, thc greater your anxiety and nervous apprehension; and if, after all (it gener ally ends so), the cherisher?, tho inimita ble, the invaluable meerschaum is broken all to pieces, your agonizing sense of loss pays (lear l'or your season of uneasy ecstaey. This j .ever-present excitement and 0 unrest is destructive, to the peuce and comTort which should attend thoughts ol* pipe-smoking. Our pipe should he our refuge and solace, rather than our care and torment. You will seldom lind a smoker ot age and experience indulging his habit through a costly-and fragile mouin in . possibly, if he he rich, he will have yon to his cabinet and parade be fore you a choice specimen of "real Vienna." hut you will notice that the [.lay is still virgin, and having carefully locked -it. back in thc cabinet, your ex perienced friend picks up some battered, lisrcputablc looking old corn-cob or ither, which bc loads ami lires with a u'gli of relief and satisfaction ; and when ie is til rough smoking bc throws thc ?orn-coh carelessly on thc table, nor ?treib he should it fall thence to the loor; bless you ! the corn-cob can stand t. He not deceived by this seeming neglect, however; trust me, your wise friend loves corn-cob from his heart, rind would feel its loss there, wdtile the ' choice Vienna's" evajiishnient would fhiclly harrow his-pucket.-Julian Haw thorne in thc Galaxy.
