WHAT THE WOMAN S' DIVISION; OF STATE COUNCIL Off i DEFENSE j (By Miss Ethel I. Brooker) There is a confused idea in some! minds that the woman's division isi isfcing women's organizations do not! appreciate the fact that they are co-| ordinate d with the Woman's Division. The Woman's Dvision of the State* Council of Defense is a clearing housc for the patriotic activities of women. It is in no sense a rival of any organis&ion, nor has it ayn desre to detract from the activities and prerogatives any other. The intent, from the National Com JSittee down, is to make use of any Other existing organizations, thusj conserving the force of all women and keeping intact the organizations that are in the field. One reason why the Government established the woman's committee was that it could not deal with a thousand woman's organizations each seeking special recognition and specal tasks. The Woman's Division is the agency em-; ployed by the government for the carrying out of its instructions to women. Before this can ge done systemat-i fcally every member of every organ- j ization must have a thoough understanding of the purpose and method; Of the Council of Defense. The Woman's Division of Lexing-i ton County's Council of Defense is do ing the tasks assigned it nobly. Mrs J iJucxer ol Swansea is chairman and she has organized many of the women in the different townships throughout the county. Batesburg, Lexington and Swansea are the only towns having the Red, Cross Surgical dressings rooms but; they are all busily engaged with large1 orders. Those who cannot assist with the I aurgicai dressings are helping with the hospital garments and in many other ways. Recently the county chairman or-, ganized an auxiliary council with col-' ored women of Swansea; and she is very anxious that all township chairmen assist her in organizing the colored women of each township. It is; highly important that these women help in the work of gardening, food; conservation, sanitation, child welfare 1 and Liberty Loan and Red Cross;' and the Woman's Division of the eounty can render invaluable aid to the government at this time by their: cooperation with these auxiliary coun i cils. ET&EL I BROOKER j Publicity Chairman. ! REDUCTION IN FOOD PRICES 1 Green corn on the cob, fresh! string beans and cabbage, all the fa-: miliar market vegetables at new andi much reduced prices?these are some of the things bought about by a new | process perfected for preserving veg, etables so that, afcer twelve hours, soaking: in fresh water they emerge' crisp and delicious as though justi gathered from the garden. Mr. J. K Paris, in his office at the j Hotel Chatham in New York told a-; bout the new process. Mr. Paris) saw a table spread with delectable dishes cf preserved f rerh vegetables J in the Hotel Lafayette, in Washing. ton where Hoover and officials of theGovernment, rr.d Bryan rat down to! partake of garden products that had j been treated by this new procecss, I which will revolutionize food prices,1 , i so far a? vegetables are concerned. j With this process all fresh vegetal:]) es can be out up in bulk and sold in j lots instead cf in tins ar.d jars, j in H MARKET | FOB CANKER GOODS i Home-Canned Products Will be Given Preference Over Marvland and Virginia Pack * 0 ? by Large Concerns. Columbia.?A ready market baa : oeen developed in South Carolina for ! all home-canned fruits and vegetables ' that will be put up during the coming canning season in excess of domestic needs. This announcement has beeh made by the Conservation and Production Division of the Food Ad.ministration, which has been working on the problem of marketing of home-canned products for the past two months. A number of the leading wholesale grocers and jobbers of i the State have not only expressed their willingness to buy home-canned fruits and vegetables properly prepared for commercial use, but will give the home-canned product the preference over Maryland and Virginia packed goods. The Food Administration feas on file the requirements of several large concerns and has been asked to find tne canned products to supply their needs. Thousands of cans of fruits and vegetables can be readily sold, but the packers will be required, as a matter of course, to conform to certain tjade rules. In the first place, the price must be in conformity with that for which Maryland and Virginia packed goods can be bought Canned products should ntt be offered for the wholesale trade except to large lots. It is suggested that farmers and others who desire to put , upfruits and vegetables for the market form marketing agencies, in order that their product may be handled in larger lots to a greater advantage. The grades must be uniform and certain standards maintained. The canned product must of course be put up in uniform cases, and the cans uniformly labelled. Contracts for fall deliveries should be made now or in the very near future. Canning clubs, community clubs or marketing agencies with large quantities of canned fruits and vegetables to offer for sale should write the Food Administration, Conservation and Production Division, at Columbia, stating what they have to offer at the present time or what they wiH have to deliver fn the fall, stating the price desired and all information. The Food Administration will make bo purchases or sales, but It may serve as a connecting link to bring the packers and the dealers together. As has already been announced, there will be plenty of cans and jars available for home canners during the coming season. Communities that are not supplied should report to the Food I Administration at Columbia, and merchants will be put in touch with sources of supply upon request. Attractive stock labels can be bought at a very low price. Packers of fruits and vegetables should remember that they cannot expect to receive the retail price for their products if sold at whole sale, and those who have only job lots to offer should seek a market in their home communities. The wholesaler and the jobber cannot handle job lots. Any information which may be do-' tired by any interested person or can- j ning club will be furnished by tho !
