This announcement has : been made by the Conservation and i Production Division of the Food Ad- 1 i I ministration, which has been work-1> I 1 j ing on the problem of marketing of ! i home-canned products for the past : j ; two months. A number of the lead- j i lng wholesale grocers and jobbers of ; ' the State have not only expressed ! their willingness to buy home-canned j ( fruits and vegetables properly pre- ^ | pared for commercial use, but will j give the home-canned product the I preference over Maryland and Vir- < ginia packed goods, j The Food Administration fcas on ] file the requirements of several large concerns and has been asked to find the canned products to supply their needs. Thousands of cans of fruits and vegetables can be readily sold, r but the packers will be required, as a I matter of course, to conform to cer- j tain tjade rules. In the first place, the price must be j in conformity with that for which Maryland and Virginia packed goods i can De Dougnt. , Canned products should not be of-1 fered for the wholesale trade except in large lots. It is suggested that farmers and others who desire to put upfruits and vegetables for the market form marketing agencies, in order that their product may be handled in larger lots to a greater advantage. The grades must be uniform and certain standards maintained. The , canned product must of course he put up in uniform cases, and the cans unij formly labelled. Contracts for fall deliveries should be made now or in the very near future. Canning club?, community clubs or j marketing agencies with large quantities of canned fruits and vegetable# ' to offer for sale should write the Food j Administration, Conservation and Pro| duction Division, at Columbia, stating ! what they have to offer at the present time or what the* will have to deliver I in the fall, stating the price desired and all Information. The Food Administration will make no purchases or sales, but it may serve as a connecting link to bring the packers and the dealers together. As has -already been announced, there will be plenty of cans and jars available for hone canners during the coming season. Communities that are not supplied should report to the Food ' i Administration at Columbia, and merj chants will be put in touch with I sources of supply upon request. At- j tractive stock labels can be bought at a very low price. Packers of fruits and vegetable* should remember that they cannot ex| pert to receive the retail price for ' i their products if sold at whole sale, I and those who have only job lots to offer should seek a market in their , home communities. The wholesaler j and the jobber cannot handle job | lots. j Any Information which may be desired by any interested person or canning club will be furnished by the , Conservation and Production Division j of ihe Food Administration. Columbia, i 1 ! DANGEROUS RUMOR i SHOWN TO BE FALSE , ?P.ourrls in circulation to the effect that' Food Administration officials had stared no further conservation of wheat was necessary have been nailed as unfouded in a telegram ; received by William Elliott. State food j administrator, from Herbert Hoover. j ".v'o statement of this character has I aver been issued," says Mr. Hoover, and the federal food administrator ( then states frankly the exact situation which emphasizes the absolute neces- v sity of even greater conservation of , wheat than the American people have yet practiced. For that reason the appeal was recently made to the Ameri- C can people, through the churches, 'uy Mr. Hoover, asking that every one ! who possibly can do so discontinue eating wheat or wheat products in any r form until the next harvest. It is stated in Mr. I-Ioovcr's tele- gram that American supplies of wheat until the next harvest allow a home consumption of not more than ontthird of normal, if America is to maintain allied supplies?thut is. the sending of wheat to Europe, as this country is pledged to do. At the beginning of May. there were in farmers' hands and in storage in America about 75,000.000 bushel? of : whaat. which will hare to carry tha American people for approx'mateir tfcrse months, until the new crop comes ia. America's normal ronsumptlon for three mouths would be 120.- t 000.000 bushels, not allowing the allies anything. ( 1 can therefore be really see? that i r reports quoting Fsod Administration ! s offi :ais as saying there is no further 1 . need of tvheat. saving are simply en- \ ^ propaganda of a very dangerout ! ilnd. j ' >io. i6e<rr\ ^ REPORT OF TEE C The Carolina Nc i; Columbia in the State .of South Ca June 29, 19: RESOURCI Loans and discounts Customers' liability account of 4,ac eptar t ank and now outsta- ding J.
