The masses of troops under Goi don received their charges with coolness. Up to 1*2 o'clock il.o fighting wascontinued with great vigor ami persistency, l!ie eiteniy making in ail live separate assaults, ail oi' which were rcpulSed. 'I'll" enemy V loss must have been immense. Thev rniiii' in swarms, supposed to No several lines ni'liaitlit deep, ami the inference is irrcsifital le that t!?? slaughter was fearful. Our loss was comparatively small. The jrall.wiirv of our juen was displayed in a most gratifying in.iiiii<-r. Their conduct is the theme of unusual prais?. 1 taring the entire light. which lasted two hours, not a man was observed eoming to the rear. 1\S., l.a m.?An officer jnst from the front says that the enemy charged up to within ten paces of the muzzles of our gnus; and that they were literally mowed down; Our loss is unprcecdinily small. ? * , Further from the Front-heavy Fighting?the- Invincibility Gf our troops again proven, &c. 1'etkrsuwu:, JMarcit 150.?A heavy fight lias bean p'logresring all day on the piuwiddie road. lu-ai- hatcher's linn, -eight miles from Petersburg. There is nothing official, hut reports .tip to fivu o'clock arc dcenit-d reliable.? They state that three furiousassau'ts were.repulsed at half past two. The enemy came up in overwhelming numbers and drove JhislmVl Johnson's division a mile and a half. The Confederates were then reinforced which turned the tide of battle, and we drove the cuemv with great -laughter to and beyond their original position of the ltior uing. The ground is strewed with 'the dead and dying. Seven In nlrcd prisoners aire reported ' sent to the rear. The affair of last night, for a war of cannm and musketry, (which lasted two hours,) exceeded anything ever heard in this vicinity. Ii turned out to-day that both bclligeroQts conceived the idea that they were being charged behind their works, when, in fact, neither had left their entrenchments j heuce, the prodigal expenditure of ammunition. It was oneof the novel events of this remarkable war. The loss was small on our side, and not supposed to be large with the enemy. Ail is (juiet in the front to-day. V % From Mobile?the attack Commenced. MoriLe, March 28 ?There was heavy skirj mishing at Spanish fort to-day, without athyjn tage to the enemy. At four o'clock the fleet took a part. Our troops were in the best [of spijits and everything looks encouraging. Our casualties have been slight. The enemy seemed inclined to make a regular seige, as there lias been no general assaults. All is quiet on this side. Later from Mobile?the Fighting Continued. Mojjile, March 29.?The fighting continued all day around the Spanish fort, with the" advantage decidedly with us. The enemy's loss is said to be severe. Ours is very slight. One monitor was sunk this morning bv a shot from the Spanish fort. The enemy's gunboats commenced shelling the western shore at 'two o'clock, but were driven oil' by Jubines' battery. Forty-seven vessels, of all classes, are in sight. Everything is encouraging. From the North. IvJCUMokd, March 30.?The New York Tribune of the 28th lias Grant'- latest ollicial telegram relative to the light at Petersburg on Saturday. Ih: reports that the Yankee loss j was 16(5 killed, 1201 wounded, and 700 mis suij; ot tliuso-corps mat ncit TJn: same despatch says that IStiS Confederates were captured. Another despatch from (Jrant says that lie is in receipt of Sherman"1* reports of operations from the time lis left Favetteville to the 22d.
