Thursday, February 16,1922 BOOTLEGGER CHEMISTS. fc V Denatured Alcohol is Restored to Beverage Uses. . Bootleggers throughout the country are evolving a new industry?the rectification of denatured alcohol? ' prohibition officials say, which probably will necessitate a complete revision of the government's system of I- distribution. Reports have been re* ceived, it was said, that some of the government formulae for industrial alcohol lend themselves readily to rectification so that illicit liquor dea* ~ JonotnroH cTii fiers are ooiciiiiiiig mc ucuumivu rits under government permits and by various processes rendering it more or less drinkable. Unusually large quantities of industrial alcohol, officials declared, have been withdrawn in some localties, ostensibly for use in the manufacture of barbers' supplies and toilet preparations, but after being subjected to chemical . processes have found their way into channels of the bootleggers' trade. Revision of the present permit sys! tern now in vogue is understood to be under consideration with a view to checking any diversion of denatued alcohol into unlawful hands. There have been some suggestions It is understood of shortening the I life of existing ninety-day permits for the handling of industrial alcohol and of more rigid regulations governing the establishments to which permits would be issued. HISTORY AS IT IS PERVERTED (Continued from page 1, column 4.) ice" president, both arrived by train in the city of Augusta, Georgia, on the evening of May 15, 1865. Mr. Davis ?ad been captured, as already stated, in Irwin county, Geogia, and Mr. Stephens had been arrested at his residence in Crawfordville. They were placed upon a Savannah river boat in Augusta and brought to Savannah, where they took a river steamer to Hilton Head. vr*. TVs _ ~rnence tney wwc wiucu? jR ris to Fortress Monroe, and Mr. Stephens to Fort Warren, in Boston Harbor. The two leaders of the Confederacy were not on the best of terms. They had their differences gig during the meeting of the Confederal1'. ate congress in Richmond. Mr. Ste|r phens was a hearty union man and I Mr. Davis, as we all know, was an ardent secessionist. Their meeting on the Savannah river was purely formal, and, as Mr. Stephens wrote, ^ \ "not at a11 cordial." However, they were companions in captivity and soon revived more interest in one an"V. other. Mrs. Davis, herself, was esk f " pecially kind and attentive. Accomlif panying these distinguished men jp when they arrived on the river steam ; boat in Savannah were Judge John H. Reagan, of Texas, a memoer 01 Mr. Davis's cabinet; General Joseph Wheeler, who, by the way, was a na tive of Augusta, and Senator Clement ||& i C. lay* of Alabama, with his wife. It was the most memorable voyage ever made in a passenger boat down the Savannah river. Mr. Ste- j phens, in his prison diary, alludes with disgust to the "muddy, sluggish and crooked stream" which bore g|?" - them on the first leg of their jourtrc ney to prison. It is probable that the recent assassination of President Lincoln caused the arrest and imprisonment of these Confederates at that time. Mr. i>avis was put in irons in his cell and, added to this torture, probably more humiliating to a brave man, was the story of his attempted escape in the clothes of this wife.?Savannah Press.
