It is the same distressing cry? i | "Give us milk, that our habies may j live!" With beating heart we went to the succor of the "Babes of Belgium;" what shall our answer be to the desolate mothers of Italy? The need is urgent. Five hundred thousand babies are suffering from hunger and the hunger diseases. ! The whole child life of Italy is en! dangered, and disaster can only be (averted by sending milk in sufficient j quantities to tide them over this crisj is; and we must ask ourselves this ] question; are we willing to make the | sacrifice to send it? A good fellow is j ; usually a chap who spends his j | money freely?but always spends it | on his own pleasures. Pie buys the j drinks and the cigars when his turn i conies, but he buys because that is ; part of his selfish enjoyment. He i doesn't give any of his money to the | needy. He hardly realizes that there j are any needy. NESS AS USU i numbers of b< i gotten, and are e for BANKS 1 is. She seldom has time to do up her hair, and she no longer feels ashamed of the roughness of her hands. She has become a plow horse working for her fodder. But ifa selfish "good-fellow" sort of a man can make life a burden for a' wife, he hasn't anything on the 18-karat selfishness of a she cat that has been petted and spoiled by parents with more ambition than sense. A girl is much like a filly. A little care in the raising and training and they make good running mates, bat a fool driver can spoil them for all time to come. When you see a girl whose clothes are finer than mother's, whose hands are softer than mother's, who bangs the piano while mother scrubs the back piazza] who gets "culture" at a little one-horse college while old dad sits up at night trying to devise means to keep the banker from foreclosing on an overdue mortgage, who uses a broad "a" and blushes a fiery red when dad says "I knowed" before company1?well, she may nave a iorm to shame Aphrodite, a voice that Jenny Lind would have been proud of, and a face as fair as a June morning, but there are long bristles on her soul,; and she will be a typical hellcat for a wife. She may be a sharp-tongued cat who spits fire, or she may be one of the nastier breed that feign "poor health" and mope around the house in negilee year in and year out, growing fatter and lazier as the man of the house gets grayer at the business of being lady's maid. In either case the general result is the same. The world is full of selfish people. Old maids and bachelors are usually selfish, but that's nobody's business. It's the selfish married folk that make homes hideous, and run up the batting average of old Colonel Suicide.
