GUILTY OF MURDER. Convicts Slayers of Ethvin White. Crime Last Spring. Marion, Oct. 9.?After three days of a spirited legal battle, the jury in the case of Arch Turner and Mack Turner, charged with the murder of Edwin White, brought in a verdict of "" 1 ~ ~ nf 711 A T* guilty Willi a recuuimcuanuu ^^ ~cy. This case excited more interest than any case tried in Marion county in recent years and the court room was thronged from the time the case was called until the jury brought in its verdict. Solicitor Gasque, assisted by Mr. Bullard, of Fayetteville, N. C., for the state and W. F. Stackhouse and A. F. Woods of the Marion bar, for the defense waged a gr?at legal battle. It will be remembered that Edwin White, a prominent citizen of the Centenary section of Marion county, left home one afternoon last spring to go z to a school house near by and was never seen again until his body was found by fishermen in Pee Dee river nine weeks later. On the discovery of the body, it was found that it con tained one bullet wound and that it had been bound with wires to which were attached old plow irons. Immediately after the disapearance of Mr. White, suspicion pointed to two negroes who admitted sending him threatening letters and these negroes were promptly arrested. However, Sheriff Rowell and his deputy, Mr. Edwards,-continued work on the case and discovered clues which pointed to other parties. After several clues had been followed, the Turners were placed under arrest. Soon after his arrest, Arch Turner made a confession in which he stated that he killed Mr. White accidentally and that he alone disposed of the body. Mack Turner afterwards confessed that he helped dispose of the body, but also claimed that the killing was done by Arch Turner and was entirely accidental. JIMMY BYRNES ON STUMP.
