INTERNED ALIENS MAY BE DEPORTED HOUSE PASSES HILL BY UNANIMOUS VOTE. Laws Made Stronger Many Now Held IJeiiarded as Dangerous But Have Not Been Convicted of Crime. Washington, July 3U.? ine nouse today passed by unanimous vote a bill to deport undesirable aliens, under which the government may send home enemy aliens now interned in this country. The measure is designed to tighten up existing deportation laws and under its terms aliens who may be deported include enemy aliens at present interned as dangerous, but not convicted of crimes, and enemy aliens convicted of violations of various war time laws. Chairman Johnson of the commit- j tee, in reporting the bill, said it de- j veloped at hearings that there were 517 unconvicted enemy aliens at Fort Oglethrope, Ga., and Fort Douglas, Utah, and 150 convicted aliens who might be deported upon enactment of the measure. The house voted down an amendment by Representative Moore, Pennsylvania, proposing that "no alien whose property has been seized by tne alien property custodian during the war with Germany shall be deported against his protest pending the disposition of his property." Representative Nolan, Republican, California, declared that the place to handle the immigrant problem was abroad. "Immigrants should not be permitted to board ship to come to our shore until their fitness is proved," said he. DAYLIGHT SAVING REPEAL. Senate Passes House Bill and Sends to the President. ' Washington, Aug. 1.?The Senate ( today decided to have the proposal for repeal of the daylight saving law ! again run the gauntlet of President i Wilson's veto. By a vote of 41 to 12 the Senate passed and sent to the President the separate House bill re pealing the daylight saving measure. . During the brief discussion of the House bill several Senators predicted that the measure, like the daylight repeal rider on the agricultural appropriation bill, would be vetoed by : the President. The separate House bill was passed June IS but action in the Senate was suspended until today and, in the interim, the Presi dent, vetoed the rider and the House was unable to enact it over the veto. The Senate's action now places virtually similar repeal legislation again before the President. The'only difference in the vetoed rider and the separate bill is that the latter would not interfere with standard zones of time. Senators who voted today against the new repeal measura were: Republicans: Calder, Colt, Elkins, Lodge, McNary, Phipps and Suther- , land. Democrats: Gery, Phelan, Pittman, Thomas and Walsh (Massachusetts). Many Democrats joined with Republicans in favor of the repeal bill. ^ i?> m A Hard World. A gentleman traveling through Alabama was much interested in Uncle Ned. "So you were once a slave, eh?" said the gentleman. "Yas, sah," said Uncle Ned. "Well, well," said the gentleman. The other, alarmed came to the margin of the hole and called out: "Arrah, Pat; are ye killed entirely? If ye're dead, spake." Pat reassured him from the bot' torn by saying, "No, Tim, I'm not dead, but speechless." "Senator, these ladies have collect-. ed a lot of your speeches." "Urn." "Don't you feel flattered?" "Dunno.
