"Had I been a United States senator or congressman I would have voted against it, (the war) and I believe religiously, as firmly as I believe thai there is a God in heaven, that in the final judgment day every American citizen who is killed in this war off American soil will be charged against the president of the United State? and the members of congress of the v United States who voted for it, as an ?nonvifiAn in tha ciflfht of Uil vv ill I ailLCU. oatuiivc u.0 ? i, Almighty God, of fresh American , manhood." No, kind reader, the kaiser did not say that, nor Hindenberg, noi any other German of German blood hut it is the undenied statement oi one who claims American citizenship, and who now stands for election to the senate of the United States. "Bill," who writes some clevei letters every week to the Edgefield Chronicle, recently carried on a discussion as to whether men or women had the most sense. Bill concluded that men had the preponderance ol brains when he saw a well dressed woman in summery attire of sheei materials wearing a sweater when the thermometer registered 99 in the shade. Bill thought men could nevre do anything worse than that. But he finally changed his mind. A friend pointed out to him a young fellow with a starched up shirt and liigh collar. He had his head shaved up to above his ears, because, as Bill say6nhe could not find anything on his -face to shave. After this Bill called tiie discussion off on a basis of 50-50. ????______ The death of Senator Benjamin R, Tillman removes from South Caro lina a statesman who by sheer de ' termination had won for himself place of honor and trust and respec in the councils of the nation. Elect ed some twenty-fivf years ago to the United States senate, he gradual ly climbed the ladder of fame unti he had reached the point where he was looked upon as the leader of the Democratic forces in congress. That he enjoyed the full confidence of the administration and was consulted upon all matters of importance is, perhaps, the greatest compliment that can be paid his memory. His loyalty has never been under question by friend or foe. The senator wanted to die in harness, and his desire was respected. Without a doubt the name of Senator Tillman will go down in history as one of the leading statesmen of the times, and his long and honorable service entitlei this State to include his name in the long list of great men she has given to the nation. ^ ? > m* Dentists Can Take Care of 5,000,000.
