School Gills' Visit to Police Court Rather Cut Short. Kansas City, Jan. 27.?A visit to a police court here to-da^ by eleven high school girls, accompanied by instructors, drew a scathing reprimand from Municipal Judge Burney and caused such a furore among members of the board of education that an investigating committee immediately was appointed to place responsibility for the girls' presence in the court. The class and instructors left the court room before Judge Burney had finished his denunciation of their presence. Deluged with Interrogations. Washington, Jan. 25.?Unseasonably warm and wet weather in all parts of the country has caused a flood of correspondence to pour in on Prof. Willis L. Moore, chief of the weather bureau. A young woman in'a small town f in Virginia wrote to inquire what the weather would be on two certain days in April, expressing the hope that both would be bright and cheerful. She naively closed her lets ter with the statement that she was to be married on the second day. A youth in New York city wrote for a special forecast as to when * there would be ice in the vicinity of his city. He said that he had received a new pair of skates as a Christmas present and wanted to try them. Bojis with Christmas sleds still untried, impoverished coal dealers, plumbers idle through lack of bursted pipes and nervous ice dealers who foresee a famine next summer, are all importuning the head of the weather bureau. Prof. Moore has his own troubles, however, for he pointed out to-day that inauguration day is coming. RURAL POLICEMAN ACQUITTED. However, Sumter Grand Jury May * Again Take Up Cb$e. Sumter, Jan. 26.?It was learned here to-day that C. M. Young, a former rural policeman of Sumter, who skipped out from his home at Shiloh about six months ago, when he was accused of committing criminal assault upon a negro girl, whom he had in custody for the ostensible purpose of taking her before the magistrate as a witness, returned to his home Friday and gave himself up to Magistrate Player. The magistrate held a preliminary immediately and threw the case against Young out of court on the grounds of laclt of evidence. $ A great deal of indignation was aroused among both black and white at the time and a grand jury in a special presentment asked Judge Spain to send a posse to try to capture the two men. The men were not captured by the posse, however, having made their escape in the > meantime. Nothing more was heard of them until Young came in and gave himself up yesterday, with his subsequent discharge by Magistrate Player. The interest of the county seems to have been aroused in the matter and it is generally thought that the grand jury will take further steps in the matter when it convenes in February.
