Thursday, April 18, 1912. Let's have a clean up day for Bamberg and start a concerted movement to kill out the flies this summer. ^ o Attend your club meeting April i 27th. This is important. Don't stay J away and then kick about results. e From the newspaper accounts one ] is led to wonder whether the monument unveiled in Columbia last J Thursday was really to the women. We hope to see every business man ! in Bamberg present at the club meeting to be held Saturday afternoon, the 27th. It is your duty to attend. The Democratic clubs will meet Saturday afternoon. April 27th, for ( the purpose of electing delegates to t the county convention. Every man 2 interested in good government should I be present. In his published call in another column County Chairman H. C. Folk c calls on the club members to attend < their meetings in full force and send J tneir oest aiiu musi yamuuc men w , the county convention. Good advice, i s The idea of abolishing fees for t paying county officers and putting every official on a salary basis seems = to impress the tax payers favorably, from impressions of approval which have reached us. It will no doubt c be a live issue in the campaign this I summer. The Orangeburg Sun says ? this would be a good time for all j candidates to speak out on this subject. Bank Examiner to Court. ? Columbia, April 15.?Quo war- * ianto proceedings to oust B. J. r Rhame from the office of State bank i examiner have been brought by At- T torney General Lyon and a rule to show cause has been issued against Rhame by the supreme court on c April 19 why he should not vacate ? his office. s Legality of the appointees made by the governor in other cases will also come up at the same time. Proceedings were filed to-day in the Sandy = Springs case against W. E. Green, c magistrate at that place; S. E. Whit- I ten, magistrate at Pendleton; W. T. t Chamblee, at Rock Hill; J. A. Young, * at Iva. The complaint in each case alleges that the appointments oi these magistrates are illegal. Proceedings were also filed at the c same time to test the legality of the J appointments in the Beaufort com-v. missioners' case. They are J. W. White, of Hilton Head; A. L. Alexander, W. H. Stalworth, of Beaufort; j C. F. Boineau, J. W. Campbell, B. j Jesselson, of Sheldon; C. A. Verdier, i J. R. Cooler, W. W. Hudson, of Bluffton; C. A. Walker. R. A. Coburn, S. S. Kellars, of Yemassee, all town- i ships in Beaufort county. They were 1 appointed by the governor without . the recommendation of the delegation. The court is asked to exclude ! * 1 ? ? ?? - ^ "" " ? ^ rt -in ^ orQ mem iruiu onice auu iu aujuugv j against them the cost of the proceedings together with such fines not * to exceed $2,000 as the court may , deem best. Poison Ends Girl's Life. i Spartanburg, April 15.?Miss Bes sie Atkins, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Atkins, of Holly Springs, j drank a bottle of carbolic acid at her home Sunday afternoon and died in 15 minutes. The motive for the act is unknown. Her younger sister who 1 came upon her when in the act of 1 drinking the poison attempted to stay , her hand, but in vain. The young woman was about 20 years of age. She has recently recovered from measles. No inquest was held. CANDIDATES' CARDS. LIQUOR SEIZURES IX BAMBERG. Seven Arrested, Cluirged with Sell- * " ing Liquor. Bamberg, April 14.?The blind tigers of Bamberg received quite a ?0< little shock early yesterday morning when Chief of Police Hand and his ? deputies pounced down upon them j suddenly and unexpectedly. It was * surmised by the officers that a full supply would be on hand for the Sat- ?< Lirday trade, and that rich seizures j?. would be made. But in this they were mistaken, or else the "tigers" j| were too cunning for the officers, for in some instances not "a drop of the stuff" was found on the premises and ? the largest seizure made netted only g?, forty-five pints of beer and three ^5 naif-pints of whiskey. This was obtained from Flernoid Smoak. From the premises of H. W. Beard about half a barrel of bottled beer was ob- ffe tained, and from Josh Lott a keg of gjg, beer. The following were arrested un- "2" der warrants charging the illegal sale ^ 3f whiskey: H. \V. Beard, Josh s1 Lott, Flernoid Smoak, W. D. Blume, Joe Robinson, T. D. Carter and gft, Fred Gaskins. j j* The cases were worked up, -by E. ond r c Cartipr whn wprp I L . VyCtl 1 auu A V. V>? W* y . sent here by Gov. Blease at. the solicitation of Mayor Smoak. They-, ^ :ame here about ten days ago and gg. went to work as operatives in the ?otton mill, and it was only about jjf three days before they had worked jg* up cases against the persons named ibove. J" T. D. Carter has already pleaded gg, guilty and received a fine of $100 at the hands of the mayor. The other :ases will be called Monday. Mayor Smoak is making an honest ? effort to to enforce the law, but it if* looks as if his task is almost a hope- eg less one, as liquor is being sold not only in the town but in country places as well. There appear to be few who are not disgusted with pro- *lF hibition and if a vote were taken in this county at the present time eg. there is little doubt that it would be overwhelmingly in favor of the I re-establishment of the dispensary, ? afKoine Druggist a Suicide.
