FIRE SUNDAY MORNING. " Mrs. M. E. Bamberg's Bank Burned. Negro Arrested and in Jail. > Sunday morning something after three o'clock the bam on Mrt. M. El Bamberg's plantation, about two miles from town, was burned. In 3 fact three houses were burned, a large barn, a com house, and some -:?| stables, all of the buildings being close together. A new com house not far away was saved by hard work, but even it and its contents ^|j| were badly damaged. The dwelling Si house, occupied by Mr. C. E. Sandi- .. fer, was also not far away, but fortn- 1 |nately the wind was blowing away '"iM ; from the house. Five head of mules ^-^1 were burned to death, and the sixth one was so badly injured that it died* ^ The loss is a heavy one. There was ~ insurance of $808 on the buildings, t. : contents and live stock, while loss is about $2,100. In addition to V the live stock and buildings, a lot of | forage, farming tools, etc., were burned, and Mr. Sandifer lost all hlf ' Suspicious circumstances caused the belief that the fire had been set, and Chief of Police S. A. Hand, Mr. E. L. Price and other* went out early Sunday morning and by careful 0?jjm work tracked a negro named James ;^}|f3Sj Rice, who lives on the place,. front his house by a roundabout way the barn and back to hip house, his comjng and going being very distinct He was at once arrested and lodged in jail. He denies the crime,< ; but his tracks were plain, and there is other evidence against him. The ' '" 'MSm negro had traded this year with Mr. A. Rice, wiio had levied on his corn and fodder and sold tne fodder to . Mrs. Bamberg, it being stored in the burned houses. His motive in burn- i^SBk ing the barn was one of revenge. Rice is said to be a bad character, ^ and a few years ago Senator S. G. Mayfield had to shoot him, wounding: I him in the shoulder. The negro had ' jJaB cursed Mr. Mayfield and attached him with a knife and then with a Y4a|| stick, and he was forced to shoot him to protect himself. This case will likely go harf with Rice, as ;J|wjja the dwelling was near enough to make the crime a capital offense. -J Masonic Election. ' A At a regular meeting of Oniaa ; ^ lodge, No. 38, A. F.
