Rhoad, dealer in wholesale millinery. I . T Arrested in oamocrx. Mr. Barney Williams was arrested here one day last week and carried back to Orangeburg. He had been arrested several days previously by a t policeman of that city for some trifling offense, and while on the way to the .guard house he made his escape. The policeman fired his pistol at him several times as he ran off but did not hit him. When he was taken back to Orangeburg Mr. Williams was tried in the mayor's court and fined $2.00. He swore out a warrant before a magistrate, charging the policeman with assault and battery, and this case will be tried by the circuit court. The policeman claims he did not shoot to hit Williams, but fired his pistol in the air to make him stop. ilule Jerks Thumb Off. Mr. W. M. Cauthen sustained a painful and extraordinary accident last Friday by which he lost the thumb of his left hand. Mr. Cauthen was on his way to Batesburg and was leading a mule. The rope was wrapped around his left hand, and by a sudden jerk of the animal the thumb Ua was cumpieueiy puncu uii. uc icturned home and was attended by a physician and has suffered very little from the wound. Patterson last week to fill a vacancy at West Point and one at Annapolis the following appointments have heen made: For West Point, Theo Martin of Blackville; alternates, Frank B. Free of Barnwell and Ralph Walker of Appleton. For Annapolis, William English Campbell of Port Royal; alternate, McNair of Aiken. Move's Contest for Most Popular Young People Goes Merrily on?The Leaders. The last month of the most notable contest ever held in Bamberg is well under wav, and the time is growing short. There is much interest i being taken in both the monthly contest for the candy, and especially in the grand contest, the winners in which will have free trips to Jamestown. For tne contest of the month, Miss Eula Rowell and Mr. H. N. Folk are the leaders. Miss Garland and Mr. Carl Kirsch still lead for the entire contest. The next few weeks will without a doubt witness the greatest' voting spurt which has yet been experienced, and as a fitting climax to tne affair, vote upon vote will be cast. You should get a vote with every drink at Moye's fount, and with every purchase of a cigar. Manning, Aug. 27.?Mrs. Mamie oseman of Aicolu endeavored to ake her own life this morning by aking an overdose of laudanum, but ortunately she was found before he poison had taken sufficient effect o put her beyond recovery. Your orrespondent sought to find out if ossible the reason for this attempt t suicide and from the information ained it seems that some time ago his Mrs. Boseman and a Mrs. Bareld had a misunderstanding, rought about by a dog of ope of the arties eating some chickens belongo the other. They met and had a ght, Mrs. Boseman striking Mrs. larfield with a heavy stick of some ind, whereupon Mrs. Barfield proscuted her for assault and battery nd the case was sent up to the ciruit court, Mrs. Boseman giving a 500 bond for her appearance. She as been revived but is not yet out of anger at this writing. ilaybe a Contest. Mr. Hiers, of Ehrhardt, was in he'city Monday and conferred with )me of the prohibitionists in refernce to contesting the recent dispeniry election, Mr. Hiers had affidaits from a dozen or more voters at Ihrhardt stating that they were not Ilowed to vote but would have voted gainst the dispensary. H. M. Graam, Esq., was consulted as attorney, nd he advised them that more evienop would have to be Droduced in rder to make a winning fight. Those ushing the matter were to secure dditional affidavits and wire Mr. rraham Tuesday afternoon to file a Drmal protest with the board of canassers.
