?h? Samhrrg ^ralb Thursday, Jan. 10th, 1907 Short Locals. The penalty of one per cent, is now added to all unpaid State and county taxes. Our new county supervisor, Mr. J. B. Our city council has gone at the matter of opening new streets in earnest. This is very well, but we hope they will also decide to pave Main street. The cotton farmer is the only man that > we know of who allows others to fix the price of what he has to sell. This is all wrong, and should be changed. Mr. G. J. Fogle, of Denmark, has beenappointed a member of the county board of control to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Mr. C. C. Ellzey. At a meeting of the Baptist congregation, held last Sunday morning, Rev. A. J. Foster was called as pastor of the church for another year, and he has accepted. We hope the farmers will have a good year for making crops, and that the prices of cotton and other produce will be such as to abundantly reward them for their labor. We understand that J. B. Elkins has sold his farm near town to Henry F. Bamberg. We do not know the price . paid but are informed that it was a fancy one, something like $50 the acre. c Buy your horse or mule from G. Frank Bamberg. New car just received. / - Let us have Main street paved, gentlemen of the city council. Our people want this work done and they are will. ing to be taxed for it. So start the work .> at once. The town can afford it. jfeV-VT"; Mr. W. G. Kirkland has been appoint .;# ed foreman of the county chain gang. He has moved his family to town, and c. they are occupying the Fitting School cottage-vacated by Mr. J. C. Moye. Mr. M. C. Sandifer and family left this week for Gastonia, N. C., where he will v engage, in the mercantile business. Mr. ' Sandifer moved his stock of goods, and ; vU i the store he was occupying will be used p by the new drug store. Mr. Moore is now editor and manager of the Pied mont, a daily afternoon newspaper published in Greenville. Messrs. W. A. Bowman, R. I. Manning, W. H. Ingram, ?. S. J During the year 1906 three new cotton mills were organized in South Carolina x with a total capital of $700,000 and nine ^ mills have increased their capital stocks from a total of $1,692,500 to $3,220,000. ! L. Counts as a mil.' linery store. They will carry a full line of millinery and fancy dry goods. They will open up for business February 1st. You'll surely regret it if you fail to see , G. Frank Bamberg when buying live stock and vehicles. He makes prices and terms right. , At the recent session of the Masonic j grand lodge in Charleston, Jno. R. Bellinger, Esq., of this city; past grand mas> >. ter of the order in this State, was presented with a handsome gold watch. This handsome present was~given by the grand lodge as a mark of appreciation for the faithful work done by Mr. Bellinger while holding the position of * grand master. Buy your live stock and vehicles, har- , ness, etc., from G. Frank Bamberg. He < will save you money, for prices and terms are right. Several important changes in the schedules of passenger trains went, into effect on the Southern last Sunday. The morning train to Charleston now arrives about - * - - ' - J ? M. a nan nour later, ana going 10 Augusta it arrives at 10:36 instead of 10:10, as under the old schedule. The afternoon train from Augusta arrives earlier, about five o'clock, and on the return trip to Augusta passes here about seven o'clock. This gives our people a shorter day in either Augusta or Charleston. Buy where you have a big stock to select from. G. Frank Bamberg has the largest assortment of live stock and vehicles in this part of the State. See him before you buy. Mr. and Mrs. A. McB. Speaks, of Varuville, will move to Bamberg soon after the first of February, and will make this city their home in future. Mrs. Speaks will open a millinery store in the building next to the Planters Mercantile Co. They have purchased the residence of G. Frank Bamberg, now occupied by him, and he will move to his new home just out of town. We very gladly welcome Mr. and Mrs. Speaks, for they will be valuable additions to the town. > Mr. D. Btssinger is now with Beard's market. Mr. J. M. Grimes has accepted a position with H. C. Folk. Mr. X. C. Kline will live on the plan tation of G. P. Harmon, near town, this year. Mr. J. T.
