Thursday, Nov. 22nd, 1906 ? ? . , ,, It is sa d that Dantzier, ine urangeburg negro, is preparing to. again contest the seat of Congressman Lever. The only thing in these contests is the fees allowed by congress, and that is what Dantzler and his negro lawyer are after. In fact, we have little doubt but that the lawyer, Moorer, is the prime mover in this contest business. A stout buggy trace properly administered would be the best means' of stopping this sort of "graft," and we commend it to the white people of Orangeburg. Recently The Herald received a proposition from an advertising agency, offering ten passes to the i Jamestown Exposition in exchange for at least one hundred dollars worth |: ' of advertising. Of course the proposition went into the waste basket without a reply. This newspaper and the press*of South Carolina have ?: been liberal in the use of space for I the exploitation of the Exposition? not for any financial reward or passes but from patriotic impulses. But if the management is to adopt the method of handling their advertising through a crowd of cut throat agents, for our part they will get nothing from us. We do not mind advertising the Exposition free, but we have absolutely no use for advertising agents." In fact they have ? ' given lis untold trouble in the past and we have discontinued business with all of them. People who want to get into our columns now must j|'. make contracts direct, for the only way we do business with advertising agents is on the cash-m-advance basis. | OUR TELEPHONE SYSTEH. aj$- * /The people of Bamberg have a pf * right to better telephone service | than they are getting and they should I? demand it. There are several grounds ?| of complaint which should be remet died and that right speedily. The | \ . Bell Telephone Company has a monopoly here, as they bought out the two old systems. In a short time they raised the rates, and one now $' pays $2.50 a month for a business 'phone on a straight line, that is, an independent line, or for this service at a residence, $2.00 is charged. For residence phones on party lines the rate is $1.50, and for business 'phones on party lines the price is $2.00 a Rj; \ month. For a town this size $2.50 is entirely too much for a business phone, and the company should not be allowed to put in party lines either for business houses or residences. They are a nuisance, is our experience, and we believe most of those who have them here will agree with us, for they are out of order a good part of the time. The plan is to put several 'phones on one line, and not to ring but one phone at a time and that the number wanted. .Very often you ask for a number on a party line | and the wrong 'phone rings. Often has the writer been called to the 'phone at his house only to find that people on the same line were wanted. Then, too, in order to make this party line work, the bell on the 'phone is set so far apart that one cannot t ; hear it ring unless you are near the 'phone, There is no question but that party line service is very unsatisfactory and the company should be compelled to put in a separate line for every customer. Payment for 'phone service is required in advance, and yet often your 'phone*is out of fix for several days arid you get no Of course vou are Dromised that if you do not get service you will get the proper deduction, but we know of cases where the 'phone #was out of fix during the month and the regular bill came in just the same. We will warrant that few deductions are paid. Our people should refuse to pay for service before they get it, and if the company doesn't like this, let them quit the town. The electric light plant commenced running last Saturday night a week ago, and since that time the 'phone service has been simply horrible, especially after the lights are turned on in the afternoon. One can hardly V" : * ; -r\ * N hear anything at all, and to attempt to converse over the 'phone after the lights are on is very unsatisfactory. Then, too, we have rang several j places during the day time recently, only to be informed that the 'phone; wanted was out of order. We don't know what other people call this sort of thing, but we call it poor service, and our people are paying for good service. - What are we going to do about it? Are we going to keep on paying in advance for service we do not get, or will we demand fhat we get what we pay for? The company has a lot of poles at the depot, which the manager informs us are to be used in rebuilding the lines in town, but this work has been promised since last spring. If the company is to rebuild so as to give us good service, it is getting high time they were about.it. Tyner's Dyspepsia Remedy a Guaranteed Cure.
