Just before Governor Boutelle was leaving Illinois for Washington, several distinguished friends gave him a little dinner at !which in natural course, the * speakers laid ou the praises thick and roseate. Governor Boutelle rose slowly and ponderously, after his invariable way, to respond in his fashion. "No one likes to be praised better than I, and the wonderful words I have been listening to have gone to my heart. But before I leave you I must make a consion gentlemen. Confessions are good for the soul, even if they are bad for tbe reputation. The fact is, I am just a blamed humbug like all the rest of you." Charged With Forgery. A Kansas girl graduate to whom had been assigned the theme, "Beyond the Alps Lies Italy," wrote this essay: "I do not care a cent whether Italy lies beyond the Alps or in Missouri. I do not expect to set the river on fire with my future career. I am glad that I have a very good education, but I am not going to misuse it by -writing poetry or essays on the future woman. It wlil enable me to correct the grammar of any lover I may have, should he speak of 'dorgs' in my presence or 'seen a man.' It will also come handy when I want to figure out how many pounds of soap a woman can get for three dozen eggs at the grocery. So I do not begrudge the time I spent in acquiring it. "But my ambitions do not fly so high. I just want to marry a man who can lick anybody of his weight in the township, who can run an eighty-acre farm, and who has no female relatives to come around and try to boss the ranch. I will agree to cook dinners for him that won't send him to an early grave, and lavish upon him a wholesome affection, and to see that his razor has not been used to cut broom wire when he wants to shave. In view of all this, I do not care if I get a little rusty on the rule of three and kindred things as the years go by." POSTMASTER ROBBED. G. W. Fouts, postmaster at Riverton, la., nearly lost his life and was robbed i - 1 of all comfort, according to nis ietier, which says: "For 20 years I had chronic liver complaint, which led to such a severe case of jaundice that even ray finger nails turned yellow: when my doctor prescribed Electric Bitters; which cured me and have kept me well for 11 years." The Camden dispensary has been closed on account of irregularities in the management by J. E. Hough, the dispenser. Many of the dispensaries in the State would be closed if the dispensers were removed because they did not carry out the law. The Bamberg Couniy Medical Society at a meeting held here May 9th, voted to establish a black list system so that parties would be compelled to pay a physician in order to get attendance from any member of the Association. It was also decided to charge $5.00 for examina tions for life insurance. Wednesday morning's papers gave the i information that attempts had been made to hold a caucus in Columbia among friends '.=f the dispensary for the purpose of organizing and having the State convention adopt resolutions endorsing the dispensary. But there were too many anti-dispensary men present j and the caucus was not held. Goat Ate His Letter. John Connolly, a seaman on board the San Francisco, has written a letter to the navy department asking that he be given a certified copy of a letter of commendation issued to him for heroism. In his letter he says that he treasured the document, but unfortunately the ship's mascot, a billy goat of unknown name, became possessed of it one day and chewed it np. Regardless of the humorons features of the story, the letter was promptly referred to the bureau of navigation, when a certified copy of the letter was made and forwarded to Seaman Connolly. It records the fact that Lieut. C. Tarbox fell overboard from the San Francisco and was in danger of drowning when Connolly jumped over and supported him until he could be picked up by the ship. The act was reported to the navy department by Rear Admiral Asa Walker, then a captain. MASTER'S SALE. By virtue of a decree of Hon. R. C.
