It D bis or her duty to be ever on the »iert f<»r tire welfare of the school as a whole. Criticisms that come to their ears should be weighed and reported. Unjust criticisms should he ref uteri. lu the mstter of promotions the teacher has a most delicate duty toper- form. Sometimes the pupil Is below the mark but so near it that the teach er frequently strain* a point attd pa»s- ihr pupil. Instead of doing a kindness to the Inexperienced pupil irt thus pro moting him, the teacher does a pal pable w rong. The parent is thus de ceived. The Incentive on th« part of the pupil to ntore diligence t« paraly sed Making grade* become* an -‘easy mark” and the purpose of the fchoo! thus far frusfrated. Teachers should be very slow in forming opinions of their pupils. That “the proper study of mankind I* man” l* a good text for the teacher to rumi nate on at the beginning of school. The teacher should know ■.oinething of the temperament of each pupil under his care, otherwise he cannot do the best work. It should be the ambition of each teacher to make hi* or her school the best in the state. No school can he greater than the leat her at Us Head. No chain is stronger than Its weakest Rnk, and, to a certain degree, no graded school Is stronger thsn its weakest grade. There are lesmns not in text book* to pc taught and the teacher should rcalixe this at the outset. The teacher that limits Ids duty in the school room to hearing recitations utterly fails to reach the mark expected of the teach er. The little society In minaitnre repre-ented by the pupils IrEthe school room 1* to be governed by the teacher, and In it will spring up questions to be settled jnat as in the society at large, hence a wise head is necessary. Barents have duties as well a* teach er*. They should watch their children closely. They should especially see to it that the older pupils study their lessons at home. One great mistake that parent* make Is dismissing the frailties of teacher* with their children. People u*e.l to believe in the divine right of kings— that king* could not err. If parents would get the moat out of schools for their children they should apply this old doctrine to the teacher of their children. Every bodv know* that all teachers err at times, but this i* not a question to be discussed bv parent and pupil. Reserve (hat subject until the children have gone to school or lo bed and then be charitable. Many parent* do not reallae that the minute the teacher is discounted in the home circle that that minute the teachers in ti uence for good over their children ceases. If father and mother say the teacher is no good that is the Anal set tlement with the child. The parent may forget that ho said It, but the child—never! —Abbeville Press aud Banner.
