The prize was given by the4 I'ulitizei rH'lioo) <>f journalism of Columbia uni versity. The editorial, entitled "The 1M ght ? f the South" appeared in the ?Nf\vi and Courier of November r>, 4U2-1. Mr. La than has been editot of the News and Courier since the , .spring of 1U10. At the time he took ovei the editorial direction of the News and Courier he was the youngs est' editor of a recognized daily news, paper. James W. Mulroy and Alvin U. Goldstein, reporters on the staff oi ihe Chicago DflHy News, won the ?$1,000 prize, in duplicate, "for the bust example of a importer's work duriiiK the year.'" The award was made in recognition of their services toward -the solution of the murder of Ivobeil Franks, Jr., by Nathan V. Leopold- and Richard Loeb. Says Governor McLean of North Carolina: "Capital punishment should Ik' administered only in ex treme cases, but I consider it very necessary for the protection of so* ciety." Governor McLean's state ment was in answer to a letter re* cently received by him from Rev. W, A. Stftndbury, Methodist minister of Raleigh, who tpronouneed the execu tion of the Stewarts "utterly bar barous, cruel and unjustifiable." It is true that capital punishment sends: * coId chill down the spine. It is a solemn thing to take the responsi bility of snuffing out a human life, even tin- life of a desperate crimi nal. ftut it is also true that so long as there is capital crime there will have to be capital punishment. The burden of responsibility rests upon the criminal, not upon organized society that has willed his death. There is entirely too much maudlin j sympathy for criminals the world | over. This is one of the reasons why I it is difficult to bring them to jus- j tii(\ Law. to be effective, must have! teeth, t! cannot have teeth without power, (:'power without the ability to enforce its will. Hurst a native o( {Sumter county, but .who has been making his home on lower Lyttleton ! street where ho purchased a homo .some time ago, died suddenly Mon day morning. The old gentleman was in his Gi>th year and was for moro than thirty years a guard at the South Carolina peiritentiary. Ho was making his home with Mr. and Mrs. Watts, who were renting his house. He had never ?married, but is survived by his brother, Mr. S. I). Hurst, of York street. The funeral services wore held from the Catholic church Tuesday morn ing after services conducted by Rev. M.
