APRIL 13, 1933 1 ' I The arfest of three in, connec tion with aiding and abetting John Barficld in his escane from the ?fiv cera of the law, and the later arreat of three more white men from the Iiethunc section in connection with tho horrible murder temporarily take* six bad eggs out of the commuhity and it in hoped that when they are brought to trial that they will be given long terms in prison. Their re moval fvdm the county would make this section safev for ' law-abiding .citizens to reside in, and it would at least stop the flow of moonshine li quor in this Mection for a while. Public sentiment is rapidly frowning down upon this evil and the courts can help matters by imposing long ' prison sentences. Propaganda haH already been started in behalf of Harfleld ? some saying that Youmans was shot by his own men. If Barfield was not the guilty man he made a desperate.* effort to get away. While traveling the highway from Ashoville to Greenville in this State last Sunday the automobile driven by two young ladies was riddled with bullets by prohibition officers near Travelers I<est because the young ladies did not stop when halted. It is considered miraculous that they wero not hit by stray bullets or their car wrecked* It would be far, better that one hundred rum runners escape than one innocent person be killed. The affair will cause delight in the ranks of the enemies of prohibition and real friends of prohibition cannot defend it, and as the Greenville News says. "\Vhen it becomes unsafe for ladies to travel the public highways of South Carolina it is time for all good citi zens 'to give attention to the situn t ion." We are publishing on this page to day all of the quarterly statements of the financial institutions of the county. A pprtisal of them will show that all of the banks are in healthy conditions and this county is l'ar from broke. They are all mapaged by con servative business men and all enjoy a large patronage. _ Eugene V. Keardon, for years the efficient and hustling Wc* rotary of tho Sumter (bounty Cham ber of Commerce, leaves within a few days to become secretary of tho 'Chamber of Commerce of Camden and Kershaw (.bounty. The Sumter Herald desires to ex press its regret over his departure and to congratulate Camden and Ker- 1 shaw on Mr. Keardon being selected as the commercial secretary of that J organization. Mr. Keardon has thousands of good friends all over Sumter county and j already the Sumter County Council ot' Farm Women and the Cooperative Cotton and Tobacco units of Hagood and Horatio have adopted very nice and complimentary resolutions of thanks to him for his splendid work in bahalf of the rural districts, tho schools, churches, home demonstra tion clubs And farm demonstration work and regretting his severing of his connection with the commercial organization of Sumter county. We are glad theso resolutions were adopt ed and published, and wo think and hope that many more such kind ex pressionsv will be adopted and pub lished. ~ j I FJmmett I, Rcardon, known nil ove. South Carolina und in other states as "E. I. R.'' "the Stfmter County Boos ter," has for years performed valuable ser\ ices in many ways for his. native city and county as secretary of the Chamber of Commerce and as a news paper writer. That is an undisputed and indisputable statement we make with great pleasure. The Sumter Herald has published hundreds of col umns of his brilliant writings, pub lished in numbers of other papers also, which have done much to put Sumter on the map in the limelight of publicity He has brought many hundreds 01 thousands of dollars of capital into Sumter and has been prominent in many ways' in public fifTairs of this city and Vounty.
