SINGLETON, j City Clerk. ??The t all ? of comets have some pwailtlc chariict eristics. They always turn away from the fUQ, and they In crease and decrease With astonishing vapidity, tin- sun evidently canning them to lengthen enormously. Though lu volume than I lit* planets, an- de inn hs of a comet Is very small. Scien tists loll us that the average deualty of 11 (\>iuot Is hut a fraction of that of the air near the earth's surface, and that the density of the extremity of the tall Is, of course, very much less. "Till* Is evident from the faet that these bodies, which are so much larger : In volume than the planets, are- de flected from their orbits by the planets which are nut even disturbed enough by their appearance for any observe I tlons to 'be taken of It. Kven when a ? comet passed through Jupiter's satel lite system In 1880 not a moon veered from Its course, hut the comet totally changed Its oildt as a result , of the magnetic force exerted. That the sub 1 stance of comets and their talis Is jmueh rarefied is further apparent he : cause even the faintest of the visible I stars can be seen through -them. K "W orlc associated with the behavior ami the nature of comets and their or . hits is yet in Its infancy, and the I knowledge that the spectroscope re i veals regarding their composition is ! con fusing. It seems to say that they [are made of hydrocarbon vapor which j shines by its own light, but part of j their light must ho reflected sunlight | as the brilliancy of a comet increases as it approaches the sun and dimin ishes as it passes away. "The Idea that comets are wander ers in space has long ago been given | ui>. Now we know that they belong to 'our solar system, but their orbits are I j such large parabolas or ellipses that ' they sometimes require hundreds of ! thousands of years to complete a rev olution. Occasionally the fascinating j Jupiter will lure one of the 'shooting ! stars' 'from its straight and narrow path. E.Ike the foolish moth it will re I voTve around the greater light and ap I pnrontly for a brief while become a I part of our system, only to pursue lis own .way after discovering the vanity of its affection. When the comet chances to cross the orbit of the earth we experience a meteoric shower. Thi* Is what we are told is to happen to us as the result of- the visit of Pons Win necke. "Sometimes Jupiter reduces .them entirely to subjection and tliey..staj? on with that planet as part c?f _Lts numer ous and expansive family. They then circulate in elliptical orbits around their -conqueror and generally dissipate their substance along their talN until they become entirely Invisible. "The tail of a comet in all its gorge ousne.ss.it not a mere appendage. If it were, it would not long stand the wear and tear that hurtling through space would give such a thin mass of matter, nor 'could it be flipped from one side to the other as it is the case when the 'body passes in the neigh borhood of the sun. It must be made largely of dissipating vapor, never the same from ^k'oud to second, voUtllUc In* or evaporating from the heart or the sun, to like the smoke In a chimney with the outside Influences which control it. "All of un remember 11a Key's eomot because It api>earod in all its uoted brilliancy in 1910 on its 75-year tour of the skies in harmony with the a* tronomers' jnslietious concerning It. One of the most famous comets lu' history Is that of 1(180, hy which New ton proved that Comets move under the Influence of the gravitation of the sun ; it is believed to be the one which appeared shortly after Julius Caesar was murdered. as weU as the comet which caused excitement In 5Hl ami In 1 100. If Halley's suspicions be con firmed that this is the same comet with a 575-year period, our posterity will hail It in 2255." > Coitvlted oil Four Counts. Charleston. June 14.
