The annual meeting of the Che- j raw Bible Society will be held hub year, pruviueiice periin&i/iug. at the Presbyterian church, next Sunday evening at 7.30. The Rev. Dr. Shuck is expected to preach the hnnusl sermon and a collection will be taken to aid in the circulation of thebible. Despite the inclement weather quite a large crowd gathered at the opera house last Friday evening to enjoy the fine concert given for the benefit of the Civi j League. The finest talent of our town helped to make it a delight- ; ful evening of music and song and realize a neat little sum for the ' work of the League. There was only one regret heard all over the house?the "too low" price tickets. Any one of the selections ' was worth the price of admis- 1 sion, to say nothing of the Victor Gramophone with it's choicest records. And since we have felt the "pulse of the people," and know that they are willing to pay for the best, the League promises not to make the mistake again of giving too . good a program for too little pay. Tommy (aged six, who has Jnst been punished by his mother)?Pad, I don't believe I can stand your wife much longer.?Illustrated Bits. A Soldier's Sweetheart at Opera House To Night. The Confederate Spy, or a Sol- V diers.Sweetheart, the play which | comes to the opera house tonight. It is seldom the case that the patrons of the opera house here have the opportunity of wit- /t nessing an actor of such rare v ability, and one who has attained so much success in tho pa9t ten years as Mr. William Chalkley in the part of Phillip Bradley, the Confederate Spy. Mr. Chalkley has surrounded himself with some of the best known talents in the profession, including the well known leading man, Mr. Jack P. Goodwin, Mr. J. E. Miller, Mr. Joseph Vance, Mr. Tom Crote, Mr. E. G. Mcintosh, Miss Martha Hendley, Miss Bonnaire Vance, Miss Julia Clark. There will no doubt be a large crowd to witness the play which is of the highest class and promised by the management to be a treat of the season. The scenes of the play are laid in Northern Virginia during the trying davs of the 60's. It tells ^ of the treatment the people of j the South received at the hands ^ of Northern war politicians and of the wanton trampling upon the * sacred rights of a people noted for their chivalry and grandure of character. The love story that links the incidents of the play is well told and deeply interesting k( of itself. The chivalry of the al 8outh and the burning love and n devotion for the cause which cl was finally lost arouses the en- p: thusiasm of the old and new gen- 1 aratiou as never before since the stirring days of the Civil War. The story and incidents are worthy of the patronage of all Southern people.
