LOCAL ITEMS. A Happy New Year. May ye all live long and prosper. Miss Elise Gandy, of Doves ville, is spending some time with her sister Mrs. G. W. Martin. Mr. B. C. Clanton, a promiuent citizeu of Middendorf was a visitor to our town yesterday. Mrs. J. W. Covington is spending some time in Raleigh. N. C., with her parents Mr. and Mrs. D. G. Conn. Mr. Hiram Whiteley, who has been vising his brother, Capt. C. F. Whitsley, returned to his home in Greensboro, N. C., Monday. ? Mm. Thomas N. Berry, of alhoun, Ga., is visiting her father, Mr. L. H. Covington. Mr. Donald Pence, of Rockingham, spent several days the past week with relatives in town. Mr. Robert Spears, of Clio, S. C., attended the Bundy-Whiteley marriage last week. Miaa Sallie E. Thompson, of Bennsttaville, has accepted a position in the office of Mr. C. W. Estea. ? Mr. C. W. Estes, * General Agent of the Southeastern Life Insurance Co., spent a few days this week at the home office oi the Company in Spartanburg. Mrs. Newton L. Harrell and little daughter, M$ry Louise, ol Darlington, were guests at Maj McLouchlin's home during the holidays. Mrs. E. C. McGregor and chil dren, of Columbia, are visiting ai the home of Mrs. McGragor'i parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. M Wells. Mr. I. J. Waddill took his litth son Eld ward ever to Sumtei Monday last to be operated upoi for appendicitis. We hope thj little fellow will stand the opera tion all right and will toon A* back home. Mr. Thorton Tillman spent tht holidays at his old home in Lan caster the past week. Miss May Brock, who is teacr. ing in the graded school in Sum ter, spent the holidays in town with her anunt, Miss Emmti Stubbs. Mrs. J. D. Friersou and little daughter Lois, of Spartanburg, who have been visiting Mrs. Irene Reid for several days returned to their home Monday at Spartanburg. Mr. L. E. Castou is critically ill at the home of his mother on CJreen street. Mr. Castou is bookkeeper for the Saxon cotton mill at Spartanburg. Not feeling very well he came home a weekago last Saturday lor a rest. He has grown gradually worse, however, but it is hoped he will soon be on the road to recovery. Mr. J. Monroe Spears, of Darlington, haa been appointed solicitor to take the place of the late J. M. Johnson. There was considerable rivalry for this ap. pointment and Governor Hey| ward made the selection after matnre consideration and with a full regard for what he thought would be best for all concern* ed. Mr. Spears was highly recommended by the members of bar from his county, as well as numbers of leading citizens and attorneys from other counties than his boms. / Some New Calendars. New Year's resolutions are still in tentative shape. ? ? TheClemson Exhibit Car. February 14 is the day set apart for the Clemson exhibit car to be in Oheraw.
