Mrs. Romola Dunlap is a pa tient at the local hospital where she underwent surgery. Mrs. Effie Coleman is recup erating at home following sur gery at General Hospital in Co lumbia. BIRTHDAY PARTY Little Debra Ann Motes cele brated her 8th birthday on Thurs day, Feb. 1 with a party at her home. Ten little friends were present for the party. Debra’s mother, Mrs. Sue Motes, enter tained the youngsters with in door party games and contests with prizes. The birthday cake was heart-shaped and decorated in pink and white with candles. Following the games the birth day cake was cut and served with ice cream and drinks. The children received favors of wrap ped candies. Debra received many nice birthday presents that were opened. NEW RESIDENTS Mr. and Mrs. David Grogan and children, formerly of Ander son, are now making their home in Joanna on Hampton Street. Mrs. Grogan is the former Patsy Poag and also a former resident of Joanna. Mr. Grogan is em ployed at Joanna Wood Prod ucts Co. BEAUTICIANS ATTEND SHOW Mrs. Margaret Morse and Miss Valeria Morse will be in Colum bia three days next week, Sun day, Feb. 11 through Tuesday, where they will attend the 19th annual Hair Fashion Forum and Trade Show of South Carolina registered cosmetologist associa tion, which is being held at Wade Hampton Hotel. Others who will attend the show are Mrs. Madge Blackwell, Mrs. Carolyn Holmes, Mrs. Julia Morse, Mrs. Martha Thompson and Mrs. Essie Mae Epting. VALENTINE PARTY A group of ladies of Joanna Woman’s Club delighted the res idents of the County Home Sat urday afternoon with a Valen tine party. The group enjoyed games and contests directed by Mrs. Nathan Brazel. Mrs. Lucus and Mr. Hellams won prizes. As the afternoon progressed Mrs. Lavinia Cooley made records of the party and played them back to the group. Mrs. Murphy play ed Cupid and gave out the„ Val entines from a beautiful Valen tine box that was made by Miss Kitty Moseley. Following entertainment the ladies served refreshments con sisting of a sandwich plate, cup cakes and pink lemonade. Each resident was presented a Valen tine box of candy. Nathan Brazel accompanied the ladies for the party. PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH NEWS % Mrs. J. E. Dominick, chair man of World Mission program of First Presbyterian Church, Joanna, announces the showing of the film, “The Day of Wit ness,” Sunday, Feb. 18 at the church at 5:00 p. m. An offering will be taken for World Missions. A social hour will follow at the Church House and refreshments will be served. All members and friends are invited to attend. YOUTH CANCELS MEETING Wayne Hall, president of the youth group, announces the 6:00 o’clock meeting next Sunday has i/lr. and Mrs. Fred Kinard and children were Sunday visitors of Mrs, Frances Dawkins who is a patient at Newberry Hospital. Mrs. George Morse joined Mrs. Joe Jackson and children of Laurens spent the week-end with their mother, Mrs. Ada Little, in Marshville, N. C. Mr. and Mrs. P. L. Attaway, of Whitmire, were Thursday sup per guests of their daughter, Mrs. J. L. Abrams and Mr. Abrams. Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Nabors, Jr. and Chucky, of Clinton, were Sunday visitors of Mrs. J. D. O’Dell. Mrs. Belle Willingham, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Murphy were Sunday guests of Mrs. Willing ham’s sister, Mrs. Lydia Corley who is ill at her home in Colum bia. Miss Joyce Cotney has return ed home following a week’s visit in Columbia with Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Brown. Mr. and Mrs. Marion Boyce were recent visitors of their son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Boyce at Shaw Air Force Base in Sumter. Mrs. Grover Nabors accom panied Mrs. M. W. Sommerville, of Clinton, and Mr. and Mrs. John Henry Nabors, Kenneth and Martharene, of Laurens, to Cam den recently and visited Mr. and Mrs. G. F. Colley. Mrs. John Burnett, Jr. and Kevin visited her father, T. J. Collins in Greenwood Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Willing ham, Mr. and Mrs. Carson Na bors and children were Sunday guests of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Willingham in Rock Hill. Rev. and Mrs. Hugh Pollard attended evening service Sunday in Hartsville. Mrs. Charles Stoudemire and daughter, Zane, of Chapin, spent the week-end with Mr. and Mrs. Barron O’Shields. Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Gruber were Saturday sup per guests of Mr. and Mrs. O’Shields. B. R. Bowen, who works in Chicago, 111., was called home last week because of the death of his father, who passed away on Wednesday in Chesnee. Mr. Bowen left on Monday to return to Chicago. Mrs. L. D. Elmonds, Mr. and Mrs. L. S. Martin spent the week end in Lula, Ga., as the guests of Mr. and Mrs. J. T Wade. On Saturday they were visitors in Atlanta, Ga. Mrs. Edmonds and Mrs. Wade’s brother, who has been ill for several weeks. Robert Ballew was a Sunday visitor in Rock Hill. Mr. and Mrs. Deri Jacks at tended the funeral of the latter’s grandfather, Mr. Bowen in Ches nee Friday. Billy Adair has returned home from Fort Jackson, having com pleted his six months tour of duty in the service. He will leave the 21st to go to Washington, D. C. to resume his work with Potomac Power Co. John Earl O’Shields has en listed in the Air Force and is now stationed at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas. BIRTH ANNOUNCEMENT Dyches Mr. and Mrs. Bill Dyches, of Blackville, announce the birth of twin daughters on Feb. 6. Mrs. Dyches is the former Miss Doris Phillips, of Joanna. MELINDA STROUD BE ON ROUNDUP A local Girl Scout, Melinda Stroud, will be sent to the Senior Roundup in Vermont for 10 days in July. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gray Stroud, Melinda is training for the event. She will receive the Curved Bar award, scout ing's highest earned rank. The earning of the Curved Bar will make possible Melinda’s at tendance at the state-wide Curved Bar Tea at the Governor’s Man sion in Columbia next May. Mrs. .Frances Warner is Jo anna neighborhood chairman for the Star Fort Council. W. D. CAUSE PASSES W. Duane Gause, 42, died ear ly Wednesday morning at his home near Joanna after several months of declining health. He was a native of Newberry County but had lived in Laurens County most of his life. He was a son of Rev. W. B. and Mrs. Nancy G. Freeman Gause. He attended Joanna Pentecostal Hol iness Church. He had been em ployed by Joanna Cotton Mills for a number of years. Surviving in addition to his parents are his wife, Mrs. Mil dred Allen Gause; two brothers, Thomas Gause, of Abbeville, and Marvin Gause, of New Port, Tenn.; three sisters, Mrs. B. L. Thomason, of Abbeville; Mrs. J. H. Goodwin, of Greenville, and Mrs. A. J. Harvey, of Cleveland, Ohio; three half-sisters, Mrs. Jobe Smith, of Newberry; Mrs. J. E. Evans, of Joanna, and Mrs. J. H. Hendrix, of Greenville. Funeral services were conduct ed Friday at 4 p. m. at Joanna Pentecostal Holiness Church by Rev. W. G. Ellenburg, Rev. Ben Jones, Rev. James B. Mitchell and Rev. J. W. Warren. Burial was in Rosemont Cemetery, Clinton. Pallbearers were J. C. Gruber, Felton Crapps, Clarence Hunni- cutt, J. W. Culbertson, Wilman Morse and J. L. Abrams. SERVICES MONDAY POE MRS. mCGINBOYHAM Mrs. Emma Prather Higgin botham, 86, widow of Andrew Higginbotham, died Saturday af ternoon in a Clinton hospital after several weeks of illness. She was a native of Hart Coun ty, Ga.. but had lived ia South Carolina number of years. She was a daughter of the late Rich ard Prather and Mrs. Mary Campbell Prather, and was a member of the Epworth Metho dist Church of Joanna. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. W. E. Brown and Mrs. H. M. Elliott of Joanna; and Mrs. Qullla Mae Pitts of Clinton; two sons, C. L. Higginbotham and J. D. Higginbotham of Anderson; two sisters, Mrs. Lula Christian of Bowman, Ga.; and Mrs. Este Moore of Vanna, Ga.; two broth ers, Weslfci Prather of White Plain, Ga.; and Floyd Prather of Milledgeville, Ga.; 19 grandchil dren and a number of great grandchildren. Funeral services were conduct ed Monday at 3:60 p. m. at the Fellowship Methodist Church near Vanna, Ga., by Rev. J. Her bert Thomas, Rev. James B. Mitchell, Rev. Charles O. Fergu son and Rev. W. W.
