SUPPORT YOUR MKNTAl NKAITO 88 Radios For Every 100 Persons! Read About This And Other Interesting Facts Prepared BY WLBG In Recognition Of National Radio Month Being Cele brated In May. I Radio is growing faster than the population itself. Ten years ago, there were 85 million radio sets in the United States ... now there are more than 155 million—an increase of at least 80 per cent. A In 1950, there were 56 sets in use for every 100 Americans. Now there are 88 sets for every 100 persons. There are 60 million homes equipped with one or more radios... in 1950, there were only 41 million. Out of every 100 households, 97 have ra dios ... and weVe averaging more than two ra dios for every home. It’s said that radio goes everywhere-and it does. We have, for example, 39 million car radios in use... a radio in three out of every four cars. And the percentage of car radios is going up ... out of every 100 automobiles built in the United States last year, 79 were equipped with radios at the factory. The United States has more than four thou sand Standard and F-M stations ... double the total 10 years ago. i Despite the impact of television, there’s con siderable evidence that more Americans are do- mg more listening to radio. Radios are found in 30 per cent of the trucks, 70 per cent of the boats and 80 per cent of the nation’s business firms. One recent survey showed that the average radio station weekly reaches one out of every two homes in a market. Radio listening aver ages 16 hours a week, according to this survey, and another report revealed that teenagers lis ten to radio at least four hours a day. One phenomena is the growth of the clock radio •.. more than 27 per cent of all radios made for home use in 1959 w^re the clock variety ... and 41 per cent were portables. About 21 per cent of our radios are in the kitchen and 12 per cent in living rooms. - National Radio Month this year is something special-it marks radio’s first 40 years of service to America.
