The American people. For if they un derstood what it meant, they surely would demand that their representa tives in Congress hew the line of fiscal responsibility. They would call for drastic cuts in federal spending on such boondoggles as foreign^ aid and farm subsidies, which account for more than $10 billion a year! Senator Byrd is no scaremonger. A sound, unemotional man, he does not say that the United States is doomed. What he does say is: “When individuals become insol- governments become insolvent their money becomes worthless and they go through a revolution wringer. The natjire of the revolutions may vary, but change in the form of government is inevitable.” We need look no farther than France, where bankruptcy was im minent not many months ago, for a good illustration. They solved the problem by acepting a virtual dic tatorship. Is that what we want? This, then, is the danger the na tion faces when its representatives don’t take steps to live within a vent they take bankruptcy and dis- budget and reduce astronomical debt. Tragically, American com placency about such fundamental issues is amazing. The national weakness of character in this re spect is ominous. Unless Congress can reform and hold expenditures to a reasonable level, cut down some of the mountain of debt being piled up for future generations, the prospect of this republic enjoying personal liberty and a free econ omy is bleak indeed. The task of curbing the unreason of the spend ers is one that must be pursued in this second session of the 86th Con gress. .. - Mary Arrowood celebrated a hirthday'l-Vbruary 9 * \V K Waits spent the week-end in Atlanta, a. , Mr. ^and Mrs Cecil Bishop and Bill.
